Thumbs up New Pioneer 5x BD-ROM drive

Next Generation Blu-ray Disc Combo Computer Drive from Pioneer Brings Improved Features for Emerging Technology

Relax, it's a BD/DVD/CD combo drive.

The first BD-ROM drive (not a burner) and DVD/CD burner. Looks to be aimed at OEM to CE for inclusion in BD players.

5x: BD-ROM and SL BD-R/RE
2x: DL BD-R/RE
12x: SL DVD
8x: DL DVD

Remember when BD would die because some drives lacked CD support?

Gary

P.S. Not sure how the thumbs down got there.

By my rough calculations, that means about 20mins to write 25GB worth of data!

This is not a burner. This is the first announced BD-ROM drive (DVD burner). Obviously some BD-ROM drives exist, but they were specific use and weren't generally available except through private deals.

This would be a transition drive for HTPC boxes, Media PCs, and something that could go into a Japanese recorder (recorders dominate there) without being excessively expensive.

Why 5x? Think Managed Copy.

The BDC-202 is expected to begin shipping in the second quarter of 2007, and is targeted at computer OEMs and system builders.

All comes down to price ! I hope that BDC-202 also will be available in retail (as many 'only OEM' items did before) and that price wuold be around 100$ ! Then many would consider buying it

Default Pioneer second-gen BD drive: BDC-202

From the last page of Anandtech's CES coverage ( http://anandtech.com/tradeshows/showdoc.aspx?i=2905&p=4 ) i see Pioneer are releasing a new model of BD burner, this time with CD read/write support as well.
The sweetest bit of that news: "The drive should be available around the beginning of Q2 with an estimated street price below $399 and features a true SATA interface."

Considering how long BD drives were stuck at pricepoints above $700, this is great news. I expect other manufacturers to follow, which means this year we'll see BD drive prices cut in half, all still before there is a HDDVD drive available on the PC! (Unless you count the XBOX addon which turns out to work well for PCs) BD can finally take some serious ground on the PC front this year.

EDIT: Aww, crud. I just realised, this drive doesn't burn blu-ray at all! It only reads it And at $400, wtf are they thinking?
I am deeply disappointed in bly-ray once again.

Price will be $400, I had initially confused this drive for a burner and went over the board with enthusiasm and posted a thread here https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=4782

Even after reading this thread, i was thinking, "says 2x: DL BD-R/RE so it writes at 2x", I guess I'm not very bright now.

I officially hate blu-ray now.

I saw this unit as well as another rewriter unit that Pioneer were showing.

IIRC the rewriter was faster than their old one, but still single layer only and still $1k, and as noted the player only was $400.

I think that the street will be less on both - it will have to be with the likes of the LiteOn burner hitting sub $600.

That's $400 SRP. Figure $300 retail PDQ.

For HTPC something like this will be great, especially if MC comes soon.
