Weird. I threw in a CD to rip it with WMP yesterday and it said "No CD in drive or no CD Drive detected."
Checked My Computer -- no icon for the CD Drive. Restarted, got an error that took me into System Bios. Showed me there that the Secondary drive (or whatever it is) was not showing up. Couldn't select anything other than "N/A" or "Auto". Left it at auto. Still nothing. I tried a Microsoft fix program, tried system restore, and tried deleting "upperlevels" and "lowerlevels" from the registry. No luck. Anyone ever deal with this issue before? |

Thanks for the responses.
I have Windows XP. My plan is to disconnect/reconnect. But if it was disconnected, wouldn't it not open? It opens and closes fine... Oddly, I still play Halo: CE on the computer when I find time. I am pretty sure it runs from a CD. In the past, if I try to run it without a CD I get an error saying "Insert CD into Drive, you idiot." But I was able to play it last night with the CD in the drive...the same drive that apparently isn't recognized anymore. |

the power cable is seperate..that is still attached and has nothing to do with the connection to the motherboard.
I have seen CD drives disconnect themselves due to the speed that they spin..causing vibration...its normally the first thing geeksquad checks when they charge you $75 to "fix" your troubles. |

eff you...and your damn French!!
jk. it sounds like a bad connection if it isn't showing up at all in the device manager. if the wiggle didn't work, find a small computer store near you that would carry an IDE cable and try and replace it...make sure its an IDE cable..you can take the old cable with you and they can help you out. |

I know! Well you know what, though? At prices where they are now with DVD drives, it's almost worth it to just buy a new one without even troubleshooting. If it's something as simple as a new cable like jkwest suggested, that would be cool. If it's not, the new DVD drive will probably be faster and come with its own new cable as well.

Yeah, it's definitely shot. You need a 17" laptop with BD drive and HDMI out. You need that to replace your broken DVD drive.
