Yes, Blu-Ray's biggest advantage was bandwidth. Having the 50GB discs just allowed Blu-Ray to use that advantage to keep movies on a single disc.

Just the BD video is 4x the amount of bits of SD DVD. If a DVD required the entire 9GB, lets say just for video, you would need 36GB of room on the BD. Now that is not how much it really takes up for just video, but you get the idea. If you want hi-def audio as well, that takes up more room as well. I am not sure the size of the audio for 7.1LPCM vs that for 5.1DD, but you can already see how size is a big factor in quality.
In other words, BD 25s do not have enough space to warrant spending the extra money for the less than hi-def (or barely hi-def) quality jump. The bandwidth, as stated above, however, is a huge bonus. |

I was just wondering because I have seen many BDs with only 25Gb discs that looked and sounded great ie; Tears of the Sun, Lord of War, Underworld Evo etc.
perhaps these titles didn't have much for extras though. Not to mention they aren't 3 hours plus like King Kong and LOTR that would need that extra space. |
