PS3 cant read my external HDD.....can it work? - Blu-ray Forum

i have a 250gb external maxtor hdd and i hooked it up to my ps3 via a usb cable and the problem is it doesnt come up. can i get it to come up by doing somthing else?

The chances are that you haven't got it formatted as FAT32 which is the only file format the PS3 will read on external drives.

Connect the drive to your PC and check in the properties to see the file system. If it is new and empty, or you don't mind wiping it, you can use something like SwissKnife to format it to FAT32.

hey, no i didnt have it formatted to FAT32. ill give it a shot, thanks for the help

Windows won't let you format the full 250Gb as FAT32 (MS limit you to about 30Gb) so you will have to use a third party app like the one I mentioned in my first post.

I have a western digital mybook 500gig connected to my 60gig ps3 via usb. The only problem I have is every now and then I have unplug the usb cord so it can recognize the drive. Long story short I have none of the problems you are having maybe you do have to reformat your drive but then again I know my drive isn't in a FAT32 format.

somewhere in this forum there is a link to setting this up right using Swiss Knife. its a shareware app that converts drives to fat32/ntfs.
however, it wont format my 1TB G-Raid as one big drive

Have to do it as half (498GB) :P

Undertand there is a maximum file size per file.
