Default Need help .. external HDD for PS3

ok so i have an original launch 60gb system .. after the recent surplus of good arcade games and what not i am getting nervously low on space .. my last check after deleting all my pics and lots of videos is about 13 GB left .. i know that is still a lot of space but itll be gone before i know it .. i dont want to change my internal HDD ..( i tend to have problems happen when doing things like that ) so id like to just get an external one for now ..nothing too big even maybe 120gb or even less maybe .. so does anyone here have an external one that they would recommend ?? im not looking ot spend a fortune either as the wife already hates how mcuh i spend on games ... so in hte 100 or less range would be good ..

Seagate and WD (western digital) are all good brands.

"i dont want to change my internal HDD ..( i tend to have problems happen when doing things like that)"

It is really easy. I'm not good with that kinda stuff either but it was a piece of pie.

I swapped my 60GB out for a 500GB not too long ago. Only stripped one screw when taking it out and putting it back. As long as you don't rush and have a screwdriver of the right size you'd be fine. Took about fifteen to twenty minutes total.

As for external, I own two WD passports (320GB) and love both of 'em. I've plugged them into my PS3 on multiple occasions to view videos or play music off of 'em. I highly recommend them.

Just remember you can't put games on an external, only pictures, music and video. But an external is required to backup the PS3's drive.

It took me about 4 minutes to replace mine, and didn't have any issue with any screws. ANY screw can be stripped if you're doing it wrong!

Expensive for the size. You can get 500+ GB on Newegg for $70.

Works for save files, yes-- but those are TINY compared to whole games. What is taking up all the room on your drive?

You can copy saved games as long as their are not protected. The majority of PSN save game files are copy protected, but will backup.

I would get 2 drives. A 320GB or 500GB internal, and an external USB to make backups & restore to new internal. You can get a 1TB external for $100 now!

For a 320GB one, I recommend Seagate Momentus 320GB 7200RPM for only $89 on Newegg.

Unless you're doing regular backups, I would recommend a high-rated 5400 rpm Western Digital or Seagate (320GB or 500GB) from Newegg:

Thanks. I guess I will be heading over to the swapping out your hard drive sticky so I can see what I need to do to get all my data off this drive, thanks again.

Yeah - just do the internal and call it a day. It's a huge relief to have it. Besides, how often do you want to have to hook up your external to access those items.

I am not a computer/hardware geek - but I was able to do it and everything was fairly simple.

Now I've got every demo I've ever downloaded, plus tons of music, pics, videos, etc. and still have over 100 gigs left of my 250 gig hard-drive (had the 60 gig originally).

Just so you know, when I backed up my PS3 to an external using the Backup option in the XMB I did NOT have to re-download any of my PSN titles. They all were right there like nothing happened when I restored through the XMB.

Hi,

I was just planning to order a 500GB drive for my 60GB PS3 and thought I would start by backing up the drive that it came with. I have a Seagate Freeagent 320 and it has 3 partitions (1 for Mac 2 for PC... PC can see all 3 of them.) Anyway,.. the PS3 gives me the option of backing up on the seagate drive (it sees one of the paritions) but when I do it it reports back that the drive is not accessable.

Grrr..... I would like to upgrade the HD and while waiting for the new HD fill this current one up with demos and stuff but if I can't back it up then I don't know if I can move on this at all.

Any tips?>?? I likely have this problem because I have 3 partitions but I use one to back up the macbook which is why I bought the external hard drive so I can't change that.

-Brian
