So....title.
In general, what wastes more energy? LCD, Plasma, CRT, or Projectors? Rank from least to most. I'm just wondering because my brother came into my room. I had my LCD on and he was saying, "this TV is hecka hot!". Honestly....I feel the heat but it wasn't THAT hot. So I said, "Well its not as hot as the CRT I gave you and it saves more electricity." He says, "I don't like your TV". I'm like, "ok......" His projector is a lot hotter than my TV, when sitting next to it, you can feel the heat blowing in your face. So I was just wondering, if Projectors waste a lot of energy, or is it just hot air? |

I know my Plasma uses more energy than my old tube tv. Sure it was a 20" POS tv but that's beside the point.
I know it uses more energy because my electric bill is about $10 more than it was last year and the only thing that has changed is the TV. Sure it uses more electricity and I'm probably killing some animal somewhere because of it but it is totally worth it to see Lost in HD... ![]() |

Plasmas switch high voltages (could be about 200 volts) while LCDs switch low voltages (about 12 volts). Hence, plasma definitely consumes more energy than LCD. They generate more heat and they are heavier as well.
In case of projectors, the main component that consumes energy is the lamp. The size of the lamp could vary depending on the projector. Generally, this could vary from about 150 to 200 watts. Some projectors could have high power lamps. e.g. 400W Xenon lamp of VW200. So it is likely that the projectors are close to plasmas while LCD energy consumption is relatively low. CRT energy consumption should be lower than plasmas/projectors and are close to LCDs. |

LCDs have a backlight and this consumes power in addition to switching low voltage LCD panel. However, I did not think that LCD would consume more power than projectors as the projectors also have an intense lamp (in addition to panels), in some cases the lamp could be high wattage. This is my feeling. I do not have any stats.
It is interesting to see some stats on this. |

I kinda figured DLP and LCD would be the same is it not? I actually don't know the difference between the 2. Rear projection TV's are LCDs too arent they? I'm not too sure what the differnce between a Rear Projection and a DLP is to be honest.
So now we got DLP, Plasma, CRT, Projectors, Rear Projectors and LCDs? Hmmmmmmmmmm..... |

I don't have an LCD set handy. My TV is rated at 240w (56" LED DLP RPTV). My friend's 42" plasma is 425w. Here's a Samsung 46" LCD that consumes 330w http://www.directtvs.co.uk/Samsung_4...NS/version.asp One of the things people forget is that you still need to power the image processing engines inside. LED backlighting will take the power way down on LCDs however. Apparently they've gotten one of their new sets down to 90w Last edited by WickyWoo; 03-27-2008 at 03:11 PM. |

Here are a couple of good websites that compare: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6475_7-6400401-3.html - and - http://www.energystar.gov/ia/partner...arch012006.pdf
Hope this helps. |

Another study on energy efficiency of different display types. Unfortunately dlps are not included.
According to this study, energy consumption from high to low: plasma, front projectors, lcd and crt. http://www.energyrating.gov.au/libra...harrington.pdf When screen size is less than 100 cm lcds are better than projectors. This study has used 2004 material. Current technology could be somewhat different. |
