Default Want some opinions

Hey, I am currently thinking about picking up some nice audio equipment over the summer. My birthday is coming around in June so I am hoping for some extra cash from the parents . Currently I am thinking of spending a little more over a grand on a receiver plus speakers. What I am considering getting is the Onkyo 805 and the Onkyo SKS - HT540 speakers to go with it.

Will this set up feed my urge for uncompressed sound?

Want some ideas and opinions, any changes I should make?

In the military - we used to say "in an eval, the write-up must match the marks". Your 805 deserves better speakers. Always get the best speakers possible. How much is the 805 going to cost you? Let's see what we are dealing with budget wise.

Ask your parents for an advance on aprox 10 birthdays. Cash only. Then you can buy some decent speakers to go with the 805. Good choice on the receiver by the way. I would get the 705 or 805, then go with quality speakers when you have enough $$$. maybe get the two front left and right and brand matching center channel first. Surrounds next and lastly a sub.

If you go cheap on the speakers, you could blow your left tweeter. No one wants that.

What I would suggest, if you are making the above speaker decision based on a budget, is to consider the Onkyo 705 receiver and use the extra couple of hundred dollars saved towards some better speakers. Just so you know, for the best basic receiver + speaker + subwoofer combination you will want to try and have a budget of at least $2500 for 5.1 and $3000 for 7.1

Remember too that these estimates don't include all of your speaker wire and HDMI cables!

In Canada I got 5 Bowers & Wilkins M-1 speakers and their AS-2 subwoofer for $2100. I'd highly recommend them as they have INCREDIBLE sound for a reasonable price. I'll be looking at adding two more M-1 speakers really soon now that there are a number of releases hitting the market with 7.1 soundmixes on them.

Expensive hobby, what have I gotten myself into . I think I am going to get the speaker set I stated above, then prob upgrade a few speakers at a time. I can no way in hell afford all of this at once!

Then, I would even go to the extent of suggesting getting the receiver and maybe 2 or 3 good speakers to start with. Good speakers will last you 20 years or more. You won't get full surround right away, but you also won't be throwing a bunch of money into something that you will be guaranteed to throw away... thus postponing a full HD audio experience. Build high quality a piece at a time to ensure that where you are putting your money is in long-term purchases instead of short term replacement purchases.

It's funny you said that. I feel the same way, 'what have I gotten myself into'.

You probably can't afford it all at once, most people can't. Save up for a while to get the speakers, it will be worth it. But whatever you do, stick with the 805!!! It is not that much more money, plus it has a superior power supply and it also has Burr-Brown DAC's. The 605 and 705 do not have these features. If you aren't familiar with the features, don't worry. They create much cleaner sound, especially when paired with good speakers.

Stick with your current plan, just make sure you upgrade to decent speakers in the future and you will have a nice setup.
