Default Hooking up HD audio help

I am trying to hook up my HD audio and HD tv with my ps3 for bluray. I was told there was an input and an output HDMI on the reciever to go from my ps3 to my receiver to my tv. Well my receiver only has an HDMI output. I am looking for some help and hopefully some answers. The receiver is a Sony DAV-HDX 465. The tv is a Sony Bravia also. Any answers would help, thanks.

If your amp takes component in, then run component AV cables from PS3 to receiver, then run hdmi out to tv, will work practically the same as running hdmi, although you may get nixed on HD audio due to bandwidth.. someone want to confirm that?

That is true, optical will not let you utilize any of the HD audio formats.

I tried doing a search on your system to help out more, but wasn't able to find it listed anywhere. Hmmm....does your reciever have an optical input? If so you can run your PS3 HDMI cable to the tv and use an opitcal digital cable to get sound from your reciever. You wouldn't be able to get lossless audio this way however. They have HDMI switchboxes you could use also, but I'm not certain how you could use it correctly to get lossless audio from your PS3. Maybe Crakinheadz can help?

Without an HDMI input on the receiver there's no way to get lossless audio.

Default hooking up an Onkyo 705 to my PS3 60 gig

I just ordered a new Onkyo 705 and it's on it's way to me now. I have a couple of questions though if you guys can help me out.

Bitstream?? or Linear PCM what is Lossless??? Will I be able to encode DTS-HD and Dolby Digital HD with this set up?

Do I connect all my hd units to my reciever and then only 1 HDMI to my T.V.?

PS3 and Onkyo 705

Thanks in advance.

Lossless audio comes in three flavors: TrueHD, DTS HD MA and LPCM. Using the PS3 with the 705, your options are:
  • TrueHD - Decoding is done in the PS3 and sent as PCM to 705. No AVR decoding required.
  • LPCM - sent as LPCM, of course! No decoding required anywhere, anyhow.
  • DTS HD MA - PS3 won't bitstream and doesn't decode, though there are very positive info that it will be updated via firmware to do so, at some future point. You'll have to wait for this codec.

Yes. 705 has 3 HDMI in and one out, so you're good to go.
