Default How can I get a job like this?

Blu-ray Testers

Quote:
Blu-ray Has Firms Seeing Green

New Features Mean More Work for Technology Providers
By Mark R. Madler

With the Blu-ray disc getting the green light as the preferred high definition home entertainment format, companies throughout the San Fernando Valley are positioning themselves to get a piece of the action.

These firms test and replicate discs, and provide workflow services for the Sony-created disc that bested the HD DVD from Toshiba in a format war reminiscent of the battle between VHS and Betamax.

With a higher capacity for data, the Blu-ray disc is not simply for watching movies but also offers online gaming and special features that turn passive viewers into active participants. With the “BD Live” feature, Blu-ray players hook-up to the Internet for real-time interactivity with feature films.

“They are sophisticated pieces of software with an enormous amount of programming and interactive content,” said Seth Hallen, executive vice president and managing director of Testronic Labs in Burbank. “There is a lot that can go wrong.”

They don't get paid that much you realize.
But if you really want to... go for it.

You get that job by moving to work someplace expensive while you make near nothing. I know some people who have done this. Either you move your way up because you have great job skills and this was a "foot in the door," or you quickly realize you're destroying your hobby and you begin to hate your low-pay, no-skill job. =(

The better job, is the guys who go from new golf-course to new-golf course, taking GPS measurements etc, and playing the course (they need people of multiple skill levels for this) to give the course a Slope rating......

That would be a dream job... (aside from being an actual professional golfer, which I think this job would cost you your amateur status, so you'd be professional now that I think about it! )

It doesn't pay very well guys, seriously. It is also less fun than you think

Just think of the torture of something like Hellboy or the potters. Each and every subtitle track and audio track must be checked

You can only do 1 set of each at a time

so even if you have a bunch of guys working on it, that's probably a dozen go-throughs by the time you do fixes, not to mention passes to check the video, fix passes etc etc

He's right. It's just like game testers... it loses its allure after about 72 hours.

You'll spend 8 hours of every day trying to run into every wall of Oblivion just to make sure you don't get through...

I was a Beta Tester for XBOX Live before it was made public. I had to put in a certain amount of hours during the week playing certain games. Then had to fill out this report stating Lag, voice quailty, gaming experience.. etc etc.

The only thing I got out of it was a letter, a Xbox Live CD, I got to keep my gamer tag when the swtich was made in November to be public and Xbox Live Free for 2 years just for running around and playing MechAssalt online with 8 other people.

Heres the link if you wanna try something with MS. I thought about being a Vista tester, but didn't feel the need to get stressed over its bugs. I haven't done anything with it in along time.

Beta testing is a little bit different from working as a paid game tester, though. Because I used to work in the gaming press, I get invited to a LOT of beta tests (currently awaiting info on WoW: Rise of the Lich King), but all you do is play casually and submit bug reports at your leisure.

Conversely, paid testers have a checklist of crap they have to put through its paces and provide more detailed feedback.

A friend of mine works for Tiburon Studios (Madden series) and she says they are constantly looking for new testers because most people NEVER return after they finish a stint. The pay is about $9.50/hour. Their office is just outside of Orlando.

Still, for some people, it's worth it. Check this out:

Game testing was a nightmare. Largely because I have higher standards then they did most of the time...
