I've had my PS3 since the middle of December. Bought brand new. I've only played on game on it but have watched dozens of Blu-ray movies. I have it in an open environment so that isn't an issue. I used the Digital Video Essentials disc briefly for calibration. Since then, when I pop in a Blu-ray move, the PS3 is quiet for about 15 minutes but then the fan starts to really kick in. Its loud and reallly annoying when your trying to watch a movie with TV speakers. What the heck happened and how can I solve this? Thank you for your help.

The fan is just doing its job. No reason to freak out bout the ps3 cooling itself. Maybe the room temp changed. Also playing movies gets it warmer since its always reading the disc. Unlike when you play a game the disc is'nt being spun the entire time.

Yes. Possibly it is related to the ambient temperature. Is this consistent during the day and night (when it is cooler). It is strange that this started with calibration.

My 40gig is super silent for the majority of the time, whereas my 60gig's fans kick in after around 15mins...
I would say the 40gig was no louder than my old BDP-300... Which also has a fan running. |

My 40GB PS3 started making noise recently too, it seemed to help to just stand it vertical instead of horizontal. Give it a try.

Thanks for the replies. I do not believe dust is an issue since I regularly clean my system. But, it might be room temperature. I live in Texas and we're already well over 80 degrees a day here. I have a ceiling fan on, but no AC so room temperature is warm. That may be it!
The weird thing is when this started. I used the calibration disc briefly, watched I Am Legend, but when I popped in another movie (the same night) about 30 minutes in the fan really started to kick in. Since I'm using TV speakers, it gets really annoying! |

Okay. Check whether this is consistent. Check whether it is any better during cooler times.

It could be the temperature of the room it's in but i would check the vents to be sure.

Playing a bd 1 after the other will definetly make the fan speed increase. Thats nearly 4hrs straight of non stop disc reading. Btw the PS3 fan is huge. I've seen the pics. Now that you mention your playing 2 movies in a row im sure thats the primary reason. Atleast the fan is'nt letting your system cook in the heat. It will warn you if its too hot before it shuts itself off to cool.

I've played a couple Blu-rays since then and 15 minutes into the movie the fan kicks in. I had the PS3 on for about three hours the night that I started to have this issue. I couldn't finish my movie because it was annoying me. |

It looks like the noise is loud enough to bother you. Could it be some vibration from the surrounding rather than the fan. Also it is a possibility that the fan is faulty and making a louder noise. We are just speculating which we shouldn't do. The best is to contact Sony if this bothers you, they will look after you.

Just noticed that PS3 got loud (as never before) because inadvertently we had our heaters on. Switched off the heaters it came back to normal. Your PS3 issue could be due to the ambient temperature. I think there was another thread about this.

I'm in S.A. T.X. & we have 2 seasons Hot & F-ING HOT!!!, yet none of my 60gig PS3's make any noticeable noise ever!!....so I can't follow when people talk about having problems with fan noise. I'm typing this out on one of my PS3's thats been on since yesterday at 6:30pm thats almost 19hrs. I can hear it if I put my head 10 or less inches away from the right side (it sits horizontal) & it is DEAD SIlLENT in my house. I know that the crapbox3shitty is the loudest piece of junk ever made. Just be glad you don't have 1 of them. Best of luck to you.
