Post "King Kong" 1976 version

I just watched the 1976 version of "King Kong" with Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange. When comparing it to the 2005 Peter Jackson version, it seemed to me that Kong really didn't put up much of a fight at the top of the World Trade Center in the 1976 version. What do you think?

Oh pah-leeeease. What a schlockfest. That movie should be a contender for a razzy. Yuck. I would rather eat maggots in Macy's window than watch King King 1976. Gee, I wonder what the rating is on Rotten Tomatoes? W-E-A-K!

I don't know but I would guess the 1976 version had more accurate physics

I remember feeling ripped off. The posters that were out before the movie started had jets taking on Kong at the end but in the film they were helis. I agree that it was crapola. The new version wasn't bad just too long.

I forgot how horrible that was.

Jackson's Kong blew it away.

I remember seeing this in the theater when I was very little. I was in awe by it at the time. About 10 years or so ago I tried to watch it again on cable. I don't think I watched more than 10 minutes at a time. I kept flipping back to the channel and just couldn't believe how bad it was.

I caught some of that last night on AMC HD, what a waste, Peter Jackson's is so much better.

Who's Macy?

Wow! Thats some statement. The 76 kong wasn't that bad, it has good acting, (Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin) Jessica lange was ok for it being her 2nd film, the effects at the time were good and most of all the reason for going to the island in the first place (oil) is more believable than a small hack director wanting to shoot his movie there!

Tying a 40-foot gorilla to a gasoline advertising stunt (and it wasn't even a Super Bowl ad), however, was stretching 70's-update suspension of disbelief...

Meanwhile, rent Dino's long-awaited 1986 cry-when-da-monkey-die sequel, "King Kong Lives", and that'll be more than enough aversion-therapy to wipe away any positive illusions about the '76.

I saw "King Kong Lives" a few years ago on TV. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. Liked it mostly because of Linda Hamilton being in the film.

I used to love the '76 version. When i was a kid I thought it was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen. Now it's pretty lame. I still thought the fight on top of the WTC was cool though.

i agree the new Kong was pretty cool, but WAY too long. I wish I could make a custom Blu-ray disc of just scenes from movies. A sampler, if you will. I'd put the whole desert scene from the Hulk and the Kong scenes on a disc and forget the rest.

I always thought that she looked pretty hot in that movie. Sadly that is the high point of that film for me.

I'd love to see the full long cut of the 76 version again. I have fond memories of it.

Jackson's Kong blew period. It defines the phrase "over-indulgent" in ways that even Terry Gilliam and Eric Von Stroheim would marvel at.
