Default Onkyo 605/705/805 dts ma questions

A few posts in regards to onkyo's possible problem putting out dts ma....now that dts ma is going to be available soon...how do you know if your receiver is updated? Also, will this still be sent out over pcm ?...im hoping it will say DTS MASTER AUDIO on my receiver...any input would be great

It will be sent PCM, so no it won't say DTS-MA on your receiver.

If you are using the PS3 as your player (and I'm assuming you are), it will not say "DTS-HD MA". Instead, it will show up as "Direct" or "Multichannel". The PS3 will be decoding the DTS-HD MA track internally and sending it to your reciever as an LPCM signal. The PS3 does not have the correct HDMI chipset to ever bitstream advanced audio codecs so if you want your reciever to do the decoding and display "DTS MASTER AUDIO", then you need a new player that can bitstream the new audio codecs.

Are you using a PS3 as your blu-ray player? If you are, then don't worry about the issue it doesn't affect you in any way.
The PS3 will decode HD-MA internally and pass the PCM signal to the receiver. So your receiver will display "multichannel" or whatever it says, not "DTS-HD MA".

There has never been an official confirmation of this by Sony themselves so don't say that it will never be able to bitstream it. I still have hope until I hear Sony say otherwise.

so in regards to possible issues with dts ma and onkyo, is only if the receiver is doing the decoding, and since ps3 does this internally, there will be no issue because onkyo is getting a pcm feed?

yea, ps3 is my blu ray player......going to get a standalone by the end of the year once all new lineup's are out

Question

Is there any difference in sound quality between the LCPM and Bitstreaming? It almost sounds like the only thing missing is the label on the receiver?

Thanks

Mark

That is the only thing missing, there is no difference. The DTS Onkyo issues should not show up as it is the PS3 doing the decoding.

That's right. The issue is only present when the receiver decodes the HD-MA track. And only on certain titles.
There's a large topic about it floating around here somewhere. You may be able to get more information about it there.
Since you're using your PS3 now, the issue doesn't affect you in any ways. But if you do buy a standalone, you may want to know a little more about it.

Are you bitstreaming your core soundtrack?

You have to set it to PCM and let it output via HDMI. If you don't have HDMI, you won't see a benefit.

The Onkyo 605 can do it. Also, someone steered me towards a Sony (I believe the 810) that can also do it. Both are under the 500 price tag.

The 605 is an awesome receiver -- though prepare to be told to splurge a little bit more and get the 705 or 805.

The Onkyo is under 400, and the Sony is actually under 300.

They do not have to release an official statement, they have already released the specs on the HDMI chipset. The chipset that is in all current PS3's is not capable of bitstreaming advanced audio codecs, period. By releasing that information in an official statement, it would only hurt PS3 sales as a bluray player.
