Default DTS MA/PS3/Receiver

I have a PS3 and after the 2.3 update will I need to get a A/V receiver that decodes all of the new HD codecs to be able take advantage of them?

It won't matter whether the receiver will decode them or not. The PS3 will do the decoding and it will be sent via PCM (it can't bitstream them).

What will matter is whether or not your receiver will handle uncompressed PCM 5.1 or whatever (what the codecs will be converted into).

If not, time to get a new receiver.

i don't have a receiver at the moment, I am looking at getting a hole set up. I've just been waiting to see what was going to happen with the PS3. What receiver would you folks recommend?

How much do you have to spend would be my first question...I bet you hear a lot of Onkyo's though -- a lot here have them.

Cost-point will help us tell you which one to get, though.

under 2500 bucks. I have been reading alot into receivers for the last few months and the onkyo does seem to be popular. in all the reading i havn't noticed if they will receive PCM though.

They most definitely do. The 605 and up will be what you are looking for -- though with that much money to spend...

I would suggest getting the Onkyo 605 or 805 from crutchfield as they have them on sale right now. With the money left, you can get a new set of speakers to go along with that reciever. Just make sure that when you do get a new reciever to get a couple of HDMI cables. One for running it from the reciever to the PS3 and one for running it from the back of your reciever to your tv. After that it will simply be a matter of going into the audio option menu on your PS3 and setting to Linear PCM, and viola you are ready to enjoy all that is uncompressed audio.

Nice choice of speakers. What series are you looking at? I have this set up myself: Onkyo-805, Paradigm-Atom's, Titan's, CC-130 center, and a 10" sub(sorry don't remember the model number).

I havn't quite decided how much money I want to spend on the speakers, but the monitor 9 series would be the lowest I would go. I'm not sure if its worth the coin for the signature series. I will have to take a listen I think and go from there. I already have a PS-1000 sub that I bought 6-7 years ago and it still pounds pretty good, its what turned me on to paradigm
