Default new star trek: motion picture???

I just watched Star Trek: The Motion Picture on epix movie channel... is there a NEW version of this movie coming out soon? I have never seen the movie look this good, definitely looking like a 4k master with much greater dynamic range and color tamut... but beyond that this version appears to have fixed much of the "dual depth of field" issues that were in the original releases. The focus in these areas are now much smoother or appear to be "infinite depth of field" like muchof the modern film making.

anyone know if there is a release coming soon?

Maybe they're preparing a new box set with the original 6 movies for next year, where is Star Trek's 50th anniversary?

I would hope so!
I haven't bought them yet, waiting for better versions.

Would love it if they included the Director's Cut this time.

Thanks for the responses... like I said, I was blown away by just how good this version looked. Seeing as this is one of my favorite ST movies, I know this movie, and all its release iterations, inside and out... I have never seen it look like this.

Yeah. If they don't want to go to the cost of redoing the effects yet again, why not just present it as an extra in 480p? It'll be better than the DVD if they use AVC encoding and lossless audio. With branching for the HD theatrical and extended versions.

Quite frankly, it really wouldn't take much to redo all external space shots in CG for all 6 films. I know the traditional purists wouldn't like it, but it sure would bring the first 5 at least up to date with the 6th. For one, it would get rid of all those old bad compositing shots that introduced unnatural grain in the models. I'm thinking of ST:II mostly, and surprisingly, ST:V. It's really a shame that Paramount didn't let Shatner redo the effects for ST:V for the SE DVD release back in the day.

I'm guessing you don't have the Blu-ray to compare it to? If not, you may just be mistaking it for the 2K master that's been available for years. Personally, I don't see why even a new 4K scan of the original camera negative would suddenly provide "infinite depth of field" in those split field diopter shots. They were shot how they were shot and there's no way to really "fix" them in the way you describe.

Not a fan of replacing the models with CG but would be all in favour of them re compositing the shots like CBS did for TNG, sadly it will never happen but perhaps one day they will do new 4k scans of the films so we can retire the DNR ridden 2009 BDs.

Re read... I've seen every iteration and every release. This one was wholly new as evidenced by the resolution and depth of field fixes.

Paramount isn't about to re-do the added CGI effects in 2k let alone 4k. They were idiots and cheapskates for not integrating theatrical grade effects the first time around. They make enough with this franchise!

Is this Epix presentation cropped to 1.78:1, as is the version available on Prime instant streaming (presumably through Epix?)

It would break my heart if they monkeyed around with this movie in lieu of providing the best possible presentation of the actual movie that hit theaters in 1979. I cherish the dated-as-hell presentation of this on Vudu HDX, that at least looks like film.

Do you know if the version shown on Vudu HDX is the same as what's on the Blu-ray? In other words, does it also suffer from the DNR and changes to the contrast.

I understand you've seen it, past tense. The question is do you have the Blu-ray in your possession currently, so you can A/B the two directly? That's what I'm asking. Sorry for not being clearer.

Oh no, it's very different from the Blu-ray. It's really weathered and beat up looking, but it doesn't have the weird look of the Blu-ray. Like if you go on Caps-a-Holic and see how Space Station Epsilon Nine looks totally wacked out on the Blu-ray, on Vudu it more resembles the DVD.

My guess is Vudu is a scan done as the basis of the Director's Edition (pre being ****ed around with, it's the theatrical cut, no UPN quality bullshit graphics, unlike the Blu-ray it does have stylized subtitles for Klingon/Vulcan but they are different subtitles from what I see on the LBX LD). For me it's far preferable to the smoothed over Blu-ray, though I'd die for a new scan with no tinkering. I have become like entranced by the opening 20 minutes of this movie over the past year, and right now my go to for that is Vudu HDX synced to the LD's PCM track. A good Blu-ray (or UHD Blu-ray) would of course be preferable.

Except for II, all need re-scans with no tinkering.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I think I may have to check out the HDX stream.

Yeah, that would work too...I didn't think of that.

Wonder what a ST:TMP would look like if they could somehow digitally replace these non-descript grey suits with the ST:II-onwards red and white tunics w/ black pants uniforms.
