Default Sony Dropping the Ball on Blu?

Isn't this a bit counter-productive if they want Blu-ray to be a success?

Possibly. But, if the market is going to be there, then refusing to take part in it out of some attempt to protect the Blu-ray market, isn't productive either.

This is rental. And I think it is logical to assume renting downloads will occur far sooner than owning downloads.

Physicality: People like OWNING discs, but rental discs get treated badly.

Convenience: Ultimately, isn't it easier to have your top-100 rental picks already on the HDD, rather than waiting for them from Netflix, or going to the rental store?

Question: Are you going to buy title X
Frequent answer: I am going to rent it first, and then decide

So, rental is a preview for purchase. And that purchase will be a Blu-ray. Perhaps even the quality improvement of purchasing the Blu-ray makes for an incentive situation.

Pretty good points. VOD's main competition would be other video rental firms such as netflix and blockbuster. I think BR and even DVDs sell well because of the ownership aspect of it, theres lots of perceived collection value to DVDs.

Watching the movie is an experience and owning the disc makes it part of a collection and part of who you are. Ok maybe that last part is a bit of a stretch but thats how a marketer thinks!

Awesome news! Wish Apple would cancel Apple TV and adopt the PS3 as its communications network device..

iTunes on the PS3 HOLY CRAP! Sony and Apple need to join to eliminate the vast majority of inferior products that infest our society.

Not to mention this service would be welcome competition to Xbox Live's VOD service.

You wouldn't want to give prospective customers any reason to go with the 360 off the shelf instead of a PS3, would you?

Sony and Apple are some of the most defining companies when it comes to average consumer products.
