Default Samsung DLP HL-T5687S Opinions

Everyone,

Members of my family are looking at upgrading their home entertainment setup. Of particular interest is the Samsung DLP HL-T5687S. I was wondering if anyone who has this particular model, or a similar Samsung DLP TV, could give me their input/feedback. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I own this exact same model (see sig) and couldn’t be any happier with my purchase. The ONLY complaint that I have with this TV is that I would like the built-in speakers to have a little bit more kick. Other than that, I have not one complaint about it. Playing PS3 games and watching Blu-ray’s on this thing is a beautiful thing!

I was quite skeptical about buying it because it was a Rear projection, but I am sooooo glad I bought it. With it also being an LED TV, it is supposed to have the bulb last the life of the set where as the previous model of this TV (HL-TXX67s) had just the standard bulb that needed to be replaced every few years. It has gotten rave reviews on the net. Do some research on it and I am sure you’ll be fairly confident that this TV is for you.

Thanks for the reply! I did see those reviews and was impressed. I just on average place a higher value of the opinions and impressions of those on this site more than some others. Also, getting the input from someone who did not just test the model and move on to the next model or has only had it for only 2 days before posting a review is important. Again, thank you for your input, I am going to go ahead and purchase this set. I am sure my sister and brother-in-law will like it too.

I have the 61" version and could not be happier.
Virtually the same set except for the screen size.

Note: Although the 87 series officially doesn't not support 1080p24,(89 series does) there are some reports of it working with the right firmware. (ver .26)
You would still need a player that can force 1080p24 since the set will not comunicate this via the HDMI data channel.

I have a HLT5089S and it does accept a 24 signal if forced. However, I was told that it does not process the signal correct and that it has to convert the signal back to 60. If it accepts it, should I force it?

Who told you this?
Since the 89 (and 87) series are 120Hz units, they should be able to process a 24Hz signal directly without losing information. (24x5=120)
This in in contrast to a 60Hz set which has to throw out frames since the ratio is not even. (2:5 in a 60Hz set so frames get dropped)
Maybe this is what they were talking about?

The 97 series may be 120Hz , but I believe the 89 is 60Hz that will accept a 24Hz signal, but then converts it.

I meant the 87 (typo) but the 89 also is a 120Hz set. They both are.

Download the HL-T5687 PDF here.

And the HL-T5689 PDF here.

So I still don't know where you heard the 60Hz only story.

It's because it never says 120hz, it displays the frequency of the source as 60

My only complaint is the occasionall pops from it as heat builds up are a little disconcerting for awhile. Image top notch

Unless it is a typo, I saw it in my manual, here http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co...01L03_0309.pdf.

I was also told this from forum member HDTV1080P:

Your Samsung display is 120HZ but I am almost certain that it uses a 3:2 pulldown process and converts to 60HZ and then 120HZ which defeats the purpose of 1080P/24. I have not seen a review on the display yet but it is my understanding that it uses the same circuitry for 1080P/24 as the 120HZ Samsung LCD’s. The Samsung LCD’s that are 120HZ incorrectly process 1080P/24.
The Samsung DLP is still one of the best rear projectors on the market for picture quality. This “true 1080P/24 refresh rate” feature is a minor feature that is useful when playing BLU-RAY or HD-DVD discs.
If I see a review on the display I will post it in the forum. So watch for it in the forum under the link for 1080P/24 dispalsy. Rear projectors from Sony, Samsung and others are becoming unpopular since flat panels have fallen in price. It is possible no one will do a review on the Samsung DLP you own. I am still waiting for a review on some of the Sony 120HZ rear projectors but perhaps a review will not occur. The Sony rear projectors use the same 5:5 pulldown process as the Sony 120HZ LCD’s.

This is from a review on the HLT5687S on http://www.hometheatermag.com/rearpr...87/index1.html.

"The Samsung will accept a 1080p/24fps input, but it converts it internally to 1080p/60fps prior to display. I also found variations in how it behaved 1080p/24 from the disc players we had on hand, so I sent 1080p/60 to the set for all of my HD disc viewing."

So, it sounds like forcing 24p to the set from the PS3 or other player may be the wrong thing to do.

This would be correct.
If the set can't do 5:5 then don't bother with 1080p24.
Strange that Samsung would do it this way.
(Having a 120Hz capable set yet not doing 5:5 with a 1080p24 source is really silly IMO.)
In my manual 1080p24 is not listed as a valid input.
This is confirmed by the BD-30 not having it available as an option since the set does not communicate this out via the HDMI data channel.

I do not know if the 89 series (which does confirm 1080p24 as a valid input) is the same way.

That is what I would like to know as I have a 89 series. I have not been able to find a review yet on the 89 series. Does anyone know how I can find out of my set does 5:5 correctly with a 1080p@24 source?

I also have the HLT5089S, couldn't be happier, I think it is great. My question is I have it hooked up with a Panny BD30 and the day I initially hooked up the BD30 I was almost 100% positive I selected 1080/24 on the
BD30 and that same day I watched Ratatoulie. Ever since then though the Panny will not let me select 24fps ? I then thought I read somewhere where the Panny will only select 24fps IF the set can display it. So I just figured maybe the 5089S can't display it. Now upstairs I have a Pioneer Plasma
1080P/24 and it ALWAYS displays the 24fps. I am a little confused with the whole 60hz and 120hz? So should I be able to display 24fps with the Samsung? Sorry if I sound like an idiot here just a little confused myself with the Samsung.

The 89 series is an 87 with a few enhancements

Bluetooth connection for screenshots and wireless headphones
HDMI 1.3 connection
I think 1 or 2 other trivial things

I don't know about forcing 24fps on the BD30, but I know your set will accept it. The problem is, it apparently uses a 3:2 pulldown process to convert it back to 60 instead of using 5:5. When I force 24fps from my PS3 to my HLT5089S and I hit the info button on my Samsung remote, it shows 1080p@24.

You should just go ahead and move a step or two up and get the Samsung HLT6189S. I could care less about PIP, but it has HDMI 1.3 and processes the 24fps just fine. I have one hooked up to an Onkyo 605, a PS3, and a Wii. Everything looks amazing. I got mine from ABT Electronics in Chicago much cheaper than I would have in the store. Most places don't even carry this larger, upgraded model. If you have the price difference to spare, just get the better one. You won't be sorry.
