Default BD-Live update NOT available for BDP-S300, BDP-S500 & BDP-S2000ES players

"Asad Qizilbash ( senior product manager of Blu-ray Disc players at Sony Electronics): Sony's new 2008 stand-alone BD players will be BD-live capable ("profile 2.0"). The BDP-S350 model is BD-Live ready featuring an Ethernet port for an easy firmware update and access to Internet-based interactive content features. The BSP-S550 is BD-Live capable when it ships.

There will not be a BD-Live update available for BDP-S300, BDP-S500 & BDP-S2000ES players. Blu-ray Discs with BD-Live will still play on these players, but you will not be able to access the BD-Live bonus features."

Well, an update would have to include them sending you an ethernet card to install on your player.

So, yeah. No update makes sense.

I have the 300. Am I really only going to be missing out on the internet content or are there rumors of other profile features being implemented after 2.0 already known? Cuz I can do withiut the 2.0 stuff probably, actually I don't even know what it is so maybe not But I'm not buying another player now, only had this for 3 months.

I talked to the Sony rep at my store yesterday, the S350 and S550 will both be pretty nice units. The S350 will decode everything except DTSHDMA, but will bitstream, and the S500 will decode all when released in the fall. The "expected" price of the S350 is $349, and probably $499 for the S550. As already stated from Sony the S350 will be 1.1 and upgrade to 2.0 when the S550 comes out. I tried to find out why someone would buy an S550, because they sound like they will be almost identical when the S350 is released, but he assured me that it will be a better unit, not just identical units. He wasn't able to release exact details on the differences.
