Default Someone please help me, PS3 MAJOR Issue.

Ok, so I got my 60gb PS3 on launch, and its been working fine until last week, my sister plays No Country for Old Men on BD. Things run fine, and then it freezes in the middle of the movie, and random noises come from the PS3. Then the picture goes blank and says invalid disc. I can't watch a movie or play a game for over a half hour anymore. I can't turn the PS3 on anymore via the controller, and when I try to turn it off via the controller, it freezes and I have to turn it off via the rocker switch in the back.

Now when I feel it, the PS3 is a bit hot, but the fan is still very quiet.

I'm very worried because I had a 1 year replacement plan, but that has since expired in December.

What do I do??

I don't think standing it verticaly is going to make a difference. It seems to me that the fan gave out and the ps3 is now overheating.

Am I going to have to get a new PS3, or can I just take it to best buy and get the Geek Squad to put in a new fan for me?

Cause it's been kickin' for a year plus, and I really don't wanna get rid of it since I got it on launch.

well, since you're out of warranty you may want to take this opportunity to take your PS3 apart, being extremely mindful of the optical drive and do some investigating. It's not like you'll void the warranty.

Clean everything out, check the fan, get all the built up crud out making sure you don't arc static or anything.

Put it all back together and give it a go. If the fan really is burned out and you're pretty good with electronics you should be able to replace it yourself.

The fact that you can turn it on and at least run SOMETHING for ANY amount of time leads me to believe that your system is not completely bricked.

ok navyman...it was a suggestion to better disapate the heat.......you can also try a small fan. It is worth a try let me know how it goes.

But if the problem is the fan, why doesn't the system turn on when I press the PS button on the controller?

I just turned it on, and the fan is working.

I am pretty sure your fan blew out or is jammed. I would check around and see how much it costs to get it repaired especialy since it is a 60gb version, but if you have no luck and want to wait around for the 80gb and replace it instead by all means try it vertically and I would recommend and external intercooler to try to keep the system heat down. Nyko makes one that you can buy through ebgames or gamestop.

I believe if you send it to Sony they will fix it for $160-$180. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. You should search the forums. I'm pretty sure I've read that several times.

you know... if a button on your controller is jammed, it's going to cause problems when you try to press some buttons.. I had this problem after someone accidentally sat on my controller and mashed the R2 trigger down... the controller would partially work but the PS button was useless. That has nothing to do with your 30 minutes of play though, but just an offering.

I'd still crack it open and clean it for good measure.

Are you able to play downloadable games or videos stored on the HD for longer than 30 minutes? Anything that DOESN'T use the optical drive?

I'm wondering if it's a dying harddrive, or busted optical drive.

Perhaps there was a power surge and it cooked a chip - you got that thing hooked to a surge protector?

My system is in an open entertainment system, getting plenty of air. And any game or media without a disc works fine, except for when I to turn it off, it freezes and I have to turn it off by the back switch. All of the buttons work fine, except the PS when trying to turn the system on, it works when the system is on though.

And if it's $160 - $180 to fix, I might as well get a new one.

dont do the intercooler...thats a bad idea as there are many threads already on that subject. take it apart and clean it up, just take picture or notes so you put everything back together correctly. good luck

That is what I thought. Thanks for the confirmation. This would be my advice to the OP.

It just froze on a blank screen now, with the top of the system cold and the bottom, hot. It's weird. I tried to turn it off via the PS button, but the blue light is on with green flashing.

MGS4 deluxe bundle with gunmetal gray finish...

Still, I'd drop the $150 and get the 60-Gig repaired. That's not totally unreasonable for an electronics repair. I paid more to get my digital camera fixed.
