I noticed something about the playstation day conference videos...
The first one, with Kaz Hirai weighs in at just under 1Gb and runs for just under 15 minutes. So let's say at that level of quality, I believe it was a 720p video, that 15 minutes = 1Gb. A one hour video would occupy 4Gb of data and a full movie of around 2 hours would need 8Gb of data. I also checked the mps and typically it hit between 4-6 mps, and it was stereo. I thought it looked great, better than DVD and I did find myself thinking, well if Sony offered downloadable video at this quality I'd rent some titles, though I'd prefer surround sound - this would push the file size up even further of course. I'd hazard a guess that you'd need around 9Gb for a 2 hour movie with surround sound with this kind of picture quality. Then I thought, hang on... how do Apple and Microsoft offer HD movies with surround sound in a file that's barely 5Gb in size? Something doesn't add up!! I haven't seen "HD" video on either platform; can anyone here offer a comparison? |
