Default "8000:1 dynamic contrast ratio"

I was looking at the HDTVs at the store, and saw a number of sets that said something like "8000:1 dynamic contrast ratio." Others said "2000:1 contrast ratio."

What does all this mean? What is "8000:1"?
Thanks!
