Default PS3 Blu-ray drive failures?

I'm just wondering how many people have suffered from a blu-ray drive failure on their PS3.

Here is the story: I was in my local video game store (a certain nationwide chain I'll mention later, maybe) enquiring about the release date for a game. After telling me the date, the clerk asks if I watch Blu-ray movies on my PS3. "Of course," I tell him. He then tells me that I shouldn't do that because Sony puts the cheapest BD drive in the PS3 and they'll only last about 3 months. Further conversation reveals that their Sony Rep. told them this and that Sony would not be replacing these drives. I was pretty much incredulous and, frankly, a bit insulted. I've had my PS3 for 18 months now and no problems.

The question is: am I on 15 months of borrowed time?

don't listen to clerks at stores they always seem to have inside information from their friend's cousin's dad's bosses grand father.

iv'e had my playstation 3 for over a year now iv'e watched 200+ discs on it played 20+ something games on it and never had a problem with my drive.

some people have had problems with their drives yes but its a small %

don't worry and if you do sony will fix it.

Well apparently 98 percent of PS3s are on borrowed time according to that guy.

Umm.. all PS3 games are on Blu-ray discs... so simply playing games and not watching movies the drive would still run out in the same amount of time. Sorry to say this but that clerk is an idiot and so is the person that told him that crap.

I think that video game store clerk is likely an XBox360 fanboy who has been burned at least a couple of times by the various ways XBox360 consoles are known to fail. He probably wishes for PS3 to be in the same boat so he can still think he console is equal to the PS3 in terms of quality and function.

The Red Rings of Death issue is very well documented (usually caused by soldering melting off the motherboard making the system fail). Optical drive failures and hard drive failures are also common with the XBox360.

Several of my coworkers have had to send off their XBox360 consoles for warranty service more than once because of those failures (one of them has had problems 5 times).

I haven't met anyone up to this point who has ever had a PS3 problem. IMHO the system is designed better. Yeah, it's huge, but then that's one of its advantages. It can dissipate heat better since it doesn't look like a white, skinny shampoo bottle.

My PS3's are awesome. I doubt they'll ever die.
That 360 fanboy has no idea what the hell he's talking about. The PS3 has top of the line hardware in it. Why would Sony want to run the path of replacing all of those machines because they cheaped & rushed the PS3 to market? That's M$'s job

whether or not he was being a dork the drive failures have started to become very very common, especially for the newer models of PS3's. Sony WILL of course repair them, that was total B.S. by the clerk but the drive failure problem is becoming quite common. I know 3 out of 4 friends who bought their ps3's about X-mas time already on their second (sometimes 3rd) one because of the drive crapping out (all 40 and 80 gig models). I'm not being a fanboy but a realist. Xbox 360's had the RROD issue that was reaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllyyyyyyy nasty and the ps3 is cropping up with drive failure crap. the ps2 also had issues with that back in the day. It's something we should address as adults not sneer at other people and call them a fanboy of the other console.

no offense to anyone who may be a video clerk, but in my experience most video clerks are complete and total morons. They always tell you crap like that. It seems like they get off on spreading FUD to customers. Just don't listen to them.

P.S. I have been a video clerk myself.

Ha, good catch.

I don't think I would have thought of that on the spur of the moment either but it's too bad the OP didn't say something similar. The reaction might have been pretty funny once the clerk realized how stupid the comment sounded.

Look, I'm not even a PS3 fan and I haven't heard of this happening . This is misinformed, misguided, and straight out wrong information.

FWIW.......... I've had my PS3 for 6 months. It's only locked up one time while playing a game and is an awesome Blu Ray player. We generally play it for 6+ hours at a time every weekend and have never experienced an issue.

I did actually think this, but was in too much of a state of shock/incredulity to say it. The clerk admitted to being an Xbox owner. My other thought since then is that the Sony rep is trying to sell more stand-alone blu-ray players since they make more money on them.

However, as an earlier poster in this thread and several threads in the PS3 Games forum seem to be saying, there may be an issue with the newer 40/80gb models and the drive that is in them. Still not a RROD scale problem, but something that we, as owners, should look out for. Hopefully Sony will fix this soon.

Thank goodness I've got an early 60gb model.

The 80 gig model is by no means new. There is no widescale problem, so no, sony doesnt need a "fix"

In all these stories about Reps telling inside secrets to clerks.....you just have to ask yourself, why would someone with true inside information share it with a lowly clerk? Seriously. Regardless of what his story is, your first reaction should be "yeah right...because someone important is gonna feel the need to talk to you...lol"

Retail clerks have absolutely no "inside" information about anything. This is true of every industry. The sooner people realize this the sooner fanboy misinformation will be curtailed. People in these positions like to pass themselves off as more connected and powerful than they really are.
