Default Is it just me or does Blu-ray look better at Best Buy?

Okay so Ive been to best buy and circuit city, and their bluray looks amazing.
I have friends with the same size tv, 1080p and the hdmi cables and i have never seen bluray like the ones in the stores....It seems like the PQ at the stores almost looks fake...like CGI or something

The brand/model/type of the 1080p makes a difference too.

The Sony display is using some kind of custom processing engine that makes it look all weird

The quality of the TV makes a huge difference. If you're running a Westinghouse/Vizio/Olevia/Whatever random Chinese crap they're selling this week, you aren't getting what the format is capable of. It's not the pixels, its the engine under the hood that makes all the difference

your friends might have to calibrate their tv too, you cant just pull a tv out of the box these days and expect it to look great, a lot of work has to be done to get the picture just right.

Default Demo Discs

I actually did some research on another forum, and someone asked the same question. Most of the people on that board said that Best buy, circuit city and any other electronic store, uses Demo Discs that show clips of various movies. HOWEVER, these Demo Discs are specially touched up, to look better and grab attention. The colors are jacked up, thats why everything looks torched and overblown.

So basically what these stores are doing...is FALSE ADVERTISING.

Not to mention the tv's are generally set from the factory, to have higher picture levels. So when you see them in the store's they are there to grab your attention, to 'lure' you in so to speak. I cannot say this enough, after you get that new tv, use a calibration disc to clean things up and get the right contrast, color hue, temperature, etc.

when i went to bestbuy i was curios to see what settings they had there tv's on. so i went up to almost all the tv's and went to the picture menu, and they had everything turned up. the contrast was on 100, the sharpness was on 75, backlight on 10, and dont forget BB has those bright light shinning down on those tv's. it crazy how they have the tv's running 12 hours a day for months and they still retain that brightness.

What you saw is, most likely 99% the fault of 120 Hz processing which makes more frames appear per second, giving you the impression that is looks like it has been shot on video, or the whole 'staring out a window' look.

Not necessarily, those demo discs and bluray demo stations are owned by Sony, and Best Buy is legally obligated to play whatever Sony requires. BB, Circuit, etc. have no say in the matter; if you want to claim false advertising in this scenario you need to take it up with those in charge of that station.

I think its the tv, CC got in a sharp, its like 8000.00, AWESOME picture, but they had it next to a DLP which had been on the floor for 9 months and was looking faint
That made that Sharp look that much better. Plus I know at my CC they turn all the colors up, which burns more power, harder on the unit but make it look good

Typically its the 120HZ Tv's that get that reaction. I work for CC and thats what we always get. Too many people think they can buy a 1080P tv, and get the look of 120hz.

Our store in particular dont use demo discs, we just use off the shelf blu rays. And our people are too lazy to play with settings to make it look better than out of the box
