Hello, I am new here, and new to blu-ray also. Found this forum while surfing google and it looks pretty well set up, so I decided to check it out.
I have noticed when watching blu-ray movies that although the overall quality is great, some scenes are crystal clear, then the next will appear to have static. Its pretty slight, but more noticable the closer you are. Is this because I am running only 1080i or is this just a characteristic of blu ray? |

It's because of film grain. 2 major causes of film grain:
1) Film speed -- low light levels usually will need a faster fllm speed than brighter light levels. Fast film equals more grain. 2) Film size -- the more you blow up a picture, the more noticable grain will be. And then there's other factors of grain -- including development process and even digitally-added grain. All film will have grain of some levels. It just sometimes, it's not very recogniizable as such. |

Not sure if the grain was added later or if it was just the type of film they used, but it actually makes No Country For Old Men a better movie. I think it would change the whole feeling of the film for the worse if it didn't have grain.

Distance from the TV does have an effect on the resolution. There's a chart somewhere on here that shows where the best distance to view your TV by resolution.

EDIT, I'm just nit-picking though.... basically yeah, sit further away, and the picture will still look clear, but you'll be too far away to see the grain etc... |

Thank you all for the great info and clearing this up for me! I was concerned it might have been my setup because I was under the impression blu-ray always looked so crystal clear, and thanks for the warm welcomes

The FX were all shot 65mm with much more resolution than the 35mm the actual movie was shot with. |

Sorry, I guess I should have said restored & remastered rather than remade. My bad.
