Default What is the deal with Denon???

I heard a few of these receivers yesterday and I was not impressed by their sound quality at all. Did anybody else have the same experience? I'm not so sure why people think they are great.

The new Marantz line was easily superior with sound.

They must have been set up by an incompetent bozo (they definitely can be a pain to set up correctly).

Nope it was a high end speaker store - Denon just doesn't have it my friend.

Marantz is higher up in the chain, both owned by the same company. dont know what to tell you. there are alot of things that could be blamed for whatever you were listening to..

What kind of "high end" speakers were hooked up to the Denon? I don't care what kind of speaker store this was, they still could have made a mistake while setting up. The current Denon's are a little on the tricky side. I love mine, it sounds great.

I'm not too sure about that...Denon's top Pre/pro and amp combo outclasses Marantz's current offering, it's same with their top receivers. I'm thinking that D&M Holdings is positioning Marantz a tier below Denon.

Denon is a high quality product & highly awarded I might add, I can't understand it when you state "I was not impressed by their sound quality at all" you were obviously hearing but I doubt you were actually listening

And YES Denon's top Pre/pro and amp combo outclasses Marantz's current offering, it's same with their top receivers. I'm thinking that D&M Holdings is positioning Marantz a tier below Denon, you got that spot on nismo604

The Denon's Separates are definitely better than the marantz and it better be granting its stratospheric price tag.As far as receivers are concerned, Denons are not very musical. trust me I have a 3808ci(that's why I'm replacing mine) and it has a very digital sound. Marantz, Rotel, NAD, Cambridge and Arcam definitely blows it out of the water. Denon receivers definitely has superior Upscaling chips and better connectivity and Audyssey than the other brands mention but then again its a toss up because musicality s definitely not a Denon receiver's strong point.

I would definitely agree with this, up to a certain point. I wouldn't necessarily say that they aren't "musical" but I would say that Denon's typically have a more "sterile" sound than other brands. Some people, myself included, like this better because I know it's not adding it's own "sound" to whatever I play through it. I know that what goes in is what will come out.

Other brands may impart more of a "warmth" to the sound that some people like and think sounds better. To each their own I suppose.

There is also the high end marantz separates/intergrates or tribute amplifies/monoblocks which has a different quality altogether.
