Default Noobish audio question

Ok, I've got my SPL meter and all, and I've got the whole principle of calibrating channel levels, but here's my question: How do I know what volume to set my receiver at to start? Right now I've reset all of my channel levels to +/- 0db.

Also, I'm using DVE's test tones, but the test tones that the receiver itself puts out are noticeably louder (like a +9db difference) than the tones put out from DVE. Which ones are better to use? I'm assuming DVE is the better of the two to use, since it takes the player/signal into account, yes?
