Default Newbe help!!

I have an Onkyo 705/ 7.1 speaker setup, with a PS3 for Blu-ray.
All connected with HDMI.

To avoid a 2nd posting, I have searched for my answers but have gotten a headache from the different opions.

How or what do I need to setup to get Dolby HD or lossless audio. Last night my family watched national treasure. Looked good and sounded great. When a hit select on the ps3 it said it was dolby hd but on the onkyo no dolby hd light came on.

What should i have setup bitstream or pcm?
Should I be running an optical cable for sound?

Thanks in advance for your patience.
P.S. Not a kid but an electrical engineer who thought he new something before all this!!

PS3 has to internally decode the Lossless audio, and is sent out as PCM.

...don't worry, youre getting the right audio.

(for the receiver to physically display "TrueHD" or "Dts-HD MA, you need a player that will bitstream these codecs)

ps3 decodes, sends out via pcm.....you are hearing hd audio, but your onkyo displays pcm...if you want to see "dts ma" or " true hd" , you'll need a standalone blu ray player that lets the receiver do the decoding

are there any lossless versions of audio that will read as "PCM" or is everything PCM lossless?

edit: after doing some reading it looks as thought PCM is lossless when decoded, however the quality will depend on how it is encoded????
