Default I would like your opinion.

Hello gang,

Would you please tell me if this speaker wire is ok for in wall use or do you really need to spend more money for insualated wire?

Thanks!!

If you run wires "In-Wall" that aren't rated for such.... it's a code violation. Not a big deal probably, until you sell the home, and an inspector looks at it, then tells the potential buyers there is a violation.... then you have to discuss the "remedy" during closing, if they want to fix the issue of course.

if it's not a big cost difference, just run the stuff designed for in-wall use.

ALSO, just get stuff from Monoprice.com ... no reason to buy that monster-brand stuff....

Once you go in wall you have to get the wire needed for in wall. There are certain fire codes that you need to maintain for insurance purpose.

AhhHaa!! I see!!!

To my knowledge speaker wire will not cause a fire?!? I was thinking the main concern is interference? Am I correct?

You must honor the code (building code that is).

Regardless of whether or not speaker wire will cause a fire, insurance companies say that it is not code. The insurance companies could tell you that pink lamp shades were not code and you would have to abide.

The Insulation on Monster Cable speaker wire is not to Code to place in the wall? I didn't even think to check when I ran mine through the wall.

Of course it won't cause a fire...... and stairs (exterior concrete for example) are notorious for being out of code The maximum step height ("riser") of 8 ¼" and a minimum step depth ("tread") of 9" is the "Code" but having a tread of 10" isn't going to cause people to fall to their death..... but it will cause headaches if you live in a city (like I do) that is notorious for fining/enforcing such things......

Food for thought Sorry for the rant... closing on the new home, really opens your eyes to things!!!!

It's insulated to protect from "interference" if it's not designed for in-wall/in-ceiling use.... it's not the same type of insulation...thus... not code more than likely.

Definitely run wire rated for in-wall use. If it's up to code, it will be far likely to ever be called into question if there is ever an issue. It's just not something that's worth the risk for the small amount of cost savings you might initially get.

Moral of the story, if you own a home try to stay within codes whenever you do something to you house it can come back and bite ya later.

The proper wire is CL2 or CL3R wire. You can get it at Home Depot in 12 awg. It is listed as sound and security wire. That is what I run in my house and any jobs I do. Keep in mind I'm an electrician so all my work gets inspected. Side note I've never failed an inspection.
