Default HD DVD Spec from 1997!

Green lasers? Doubled sided? 1125 scanning lines?

Sorry, I just stumbled on this and didn't know if it had been posted before.

Quote:
The high-definition DVD system developed by Toshiba has 1,125 scanning lines and can store and play back more than 130 minutes of theater-quality images on a 120mm optical disc. Key technologies employed in the system are high-density mastering technology to form submicro-pits on a disc; a pick-up head that uses a green second harmonics generation (SHG) laser to read out the signals from these pits; a data transfer rate more than double that of conventional DVDs; and MPEG2 image compression and decompression technology for high-definition images. These technologies are used to realize the large capacity of 7.5Gbytes per side, or 1.6 times that of DVD, and faithful real-time reproduction of high-definition images with four times the amount of video data of DVD.

Toshiba plans to increase disc capacity to 15Gbytes per side to fit more than 130 minutes of playback time of high-definition images on a single side of a disc by the beginning of the twenty-first century.

1125 lines is correct. We used to measure the total horizontal lines which includes about 50 or so extra lines of black line (no picture) which includes closed captioning and other things.
Gross resolution lines: PAL = 625, NTSC = 525, HD = 1125 These days we tend to only measure the net resolution. 480 NTSC, 576 PAL, 1080 HD

I believe the gross resolution only applies to analog transmissions, which makes those former numbers obsolete, with current digital transmission. When you adjust the Vertical Hold on the older TVs you saw those 50 lines of black as the picture scrolled.

Up to 4 x the space of stadard DVD, it says. Les'see here, dvd is 4.7 GB x 4 = 18.8. Yet HD DVD was 15 GB. Wow, they really did want the cheapest thing for the consumer!

I have said this before. You can see from my join date I have known about the format war since before either machine was even out. TWICE I had found the same site which stated HD DVD was a 720P format. They went to 1080p to compete with blu-ray, no doubt. But that is not what Toshiba would have given us if there was no blu-ray.

I wouldn't know how to find that site today.

1125 scanlines is the equivalent of 1080i/p. 720p would be 750p in analog scanlines.
