Hit "Select" on the PS3 controller.... it'll tell you the audio you're receiving on the top-right of the screen. The Player is decoding the audio (PS3) and the AVR is passing it through.

there are two ways for the Lossless audio to be sent.

1. Linear PCM (player decodes)
2. Bitstream (receiver decodes)

...some bluray players can only do one or the other. Newer players coming out can do both.

The PS3 falls into category 1. It internally decodes and is sent as PCM signal to the Receiver. Which is why it displays "PCM"

Other players can send the audio as Bitstream, which lets the Receiver decode, and displays as "Dolby TrueHD" and "Dts-HD Master"

Linear PCM and Bitstream are just two ways to transfer the audio but with the same end result.

Nothing to worry about, unless its psychologically damaging for you to not see the receiver display the format?

Your PS3 is decoding the DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD tracks and then sending them to your reciever. When the PS3 decodes them, they are sent to your reciever as a multichannel PCM signal so that is what the reciever should read. The only way to make the Dolby and DTS lights come on is to get a player that bitstreams the audio codecs (PS3 does not).

The PS3 decodes everything to PCM, so that's all the receiver will show.

It's likely doing everything the way it should be. The PS3 should be set to PCM as the decode mode (instead of Bitstream)... The receiver will then display only PCM, even when playing Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD-MA tracks.

Exactly what everyone else said. But most Blu rays default to 5.1 dolby digital so you have to select dts-ma or true-hd in the Blu ray menu settings on the disc you are watching then hit select on your controller. it will display the sound selected.

Why? what does it say? What Blu are you watching?

you're running HDMI from PS3 to AVR, then HDMI from AVR to T.V. correct?
