Default QC poor on BD's & HDDVD's?

So everytime I go to buy a new BD or HDDVD i painstakingly go through each package on the shelf to pick out the one thats in the best shape, least amount of wrinkles, dents and other weird issues i've seen with the paper insert damaged, sticking out, or not cut correctly.

Well I picked up end of Days (HDDVD) and Corpse Bride/Sword fish and got them home and opened them all up. I like to open them immediately just to make sure everything is ok and also to take off those security stickers because it seems the longer you leave them on the harder the goo is to get off. So I open up them all, and i'm in the habit now of cleaning them right out of the package (because people on avs claim they come dirty from the factory) so for good measure i give them a once over with the monster screen cleaner/microfiber towel. I get to my corpse bride Blu Disc, and I flip it over and there is like 10 long deep scratches on one side of the disc. At first I thought maybe it was some kind of film on it, but then i ran my finger over it and my nail got stuck in each groove from the scratches. Now, fortunately I just bought this and can take it back today no problem...but what if I didn't open this for a month or two?
They'd think I did this!!!

I've also had several disc cases where the part you open on the side where it snaps close (IE disney BD's or "Unleashed" on HDDVD) have had broken tabs and then that flap wouldn't close. Also another disc where the security sticker was on cock eyed and covering part of the "HDDVD" logo on the top and when i peeled it off, the paint went with it. now some people may be saying who cares it's just a case! But when this stuff is $25-$30 & Some $40 so when I get issues with cracked cases etc. they go back. I'm a collector...i want my stuff to be nice not all ratty...this is not acceptable.

Have you guys had any weird QA issues?

Also I once bought "The Mask" with Jim Carey on DVD and it was cracked in two inside the case. also Have gotten several DVD's in the past where the thumb section you push in to get the DVD out was all broken inside (I exchanged them)

When I got my first BD, I left it wrapped on the shelf. When I got my second one, I decided I better open it up to make sure everything was okay. I knew that if anything was wrong with my first BD at that time, I was screwed, but I openned it anyway. Everything is good.

That disc with the scrtach must have been made by a tempermental robot, because these discs are (supposively) impossible to scratch.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that thinks this way! Thanks for letting me know I'm not crazy or at least that I'm not alone!

Well, Brian, that's a STORE issue.

I've been to BB many times and had to swap discs or hunt for undamaged packaging on any media I've bought there...CDs, DVDs, etc. One season of Star Trek: Voyager I went thru something like 4 sets before I found one that wasn't cracked. Fortunately the customer service/returns desk girl was quite understanding (I got lucky, she was a TREK fan). It's just not BB, but Circuit City, Walmart, etc. The folks there don't always "handle with care", and lord knows what UPS does with them.

Brian, You say there was a scratch in the Blu-ray disk? They can be scratched but the scratch will come off when you clean it. I had one that looked like it had a scratch i cleaned it and scratch was gone. They have a coating that makes them harder to scrath yes but the one that tdk has called dubius is not used at the moment, That one you can take a screw driver to and it wont scratch.

I'm the same way... Sales associates give me weird looks sometimes when I'm shopping for media.

these were clearly scratches. I don't know it almost looked as though the scratches where there and then a coating was applied to it over the scratches, like clear coat over a scratch almost. Anyways, I exchanged it today so the world is in harmony again (well mine atleast)

Probally a bad disk for sure then. I know i usally shake it to make sure it is secure. I did this to oine and could hear the disk flopping around and put it right back and grabbed another one.

QC is very hard. You can have checks after check after check but there are times when things happen in between that no one catches.

well i don't know about DVD manufacturing or BD for that matter. But alot of QC in factories checks one in a certain amount, say 1 in 5 for defects. If they have an issue with one, then they shut it down and back track.

Atleast thats how we did it at Taylor Made when I worked there years ago.

The thing that will happen is it willl do 1 in 5 or every so often that between the checks it gets misssed. Defects are a pain and it is almost impossable to not have any, You would have to check every single one to have none.

Defects are in every disc. That's for sure.
But such defects shouldn't be happening.

It'll only discourage people from buying the next-gen optical disc.

By the way, how can it be a store issue... It must've happened when or before the packaging took place, and that's before shipment I believe...

True, but I was talking about the issues of loose discs and beat up packaging. It's a crapshoot sometimes.

A lot of times disc can get scratched in shipment from being wiggled around. They can also snap if too much weight is put on the carton they are in. UPS handles things awfully and so many of those faults are there problems.

The one thing that totally ticks me off is the bottom sticker - sometimes the insert is pushed down (from poor QC) such that it is past the clear plastic cover - so that when the security stick is put on, it is on the insert itself. As a result, removing the sticker will most certainly rip or peel the insert where it made contact. The rip or peel can be large as a 1-2mm deep and along the complete bottom edge of the insert. So look before you buy!

Nevertheless, I find having 3 security stickers is complete overkill and a huge huge annoyance when taking them off. The 1 side sticker should be completely sufficient.

Anyone have any tips on removing the stickers easily without damaging the case?

I use a razor blade to cut the white stickers. I make a small incision in them and then tear them off by hand. You can't pick at them because you will put fingernail marks in the plastic. It takes me like 3 minutes to open one carefully so I don't damage it. Many times my girlfriend starts to get impatient in anticipation of watching the movie. But I think she understands the severity of the situation as she now examines the packaging with me and helps me find the best one.
