Default News about Sony's BDP's

Below is a copy of the an online chat with support. I got it to cover models BDP-S300, BDP-S500, and BDP-S2000ES. I know about the PCM setting but I was trying to get a date for the firmware upgrade to fix the problem. I hope this helps some people out.

Hi Greg. Welcome to Sony Online Support. I'm Ronnie. Please allow me a moment to review your concern.
Ronnie_>
Thank you for waiting, Greg. I'll be glad to verify about the audio conversion in the Blu-ray player.
Ronnie_>
Greg, the HD Master Audio is converted to DTS in the Blu-ray Player.
Ronnie_>
So, it will be better to select the PCM settings of the HDMI.
Greg>
So I'm not getting the true HD master audio. Would I get it if I set the player to PCM.
Greg>
Is there a firmware upgrade coming to fix this problem?
Ronnie_>
Greg, when you select the PCM, the audio will output as the 5.1 channel PCM.
Greg>
What about 7.1
Ronnie_>
If the disc is encoded with the 7.1 channel, then it will output with the player using the PCM settings.
Greg>
Will the BDP-s2000ES output the HD Audio via HDMI without setting it to PCM? I would rather have my receiver do the decoding.
Ronnie_>
Greg, I'm sorry that BDPS2000ES has the same feature as that of the BDPS500.
Greg>
Is there a firmware upgrade coming that can fix the problem?
Ronnie_>
Greg, the Firmware might be released soon to fix this problem and it will be posted to our Website as soon as it is released.
Greg>
Any time frame?
Ronnie_>
Gerg, I'm really sorry that we don't have the information about the time frame but it will be posted through our Website as soon as released.
Greg>
Okay, I'll just keep checking the website. Thank You for all your help it was appreciated.

That was amazingly not helpful on the Sony side. I'm not sure the service person (if there truely was a person there) really understood what you were asking.

Hey,thanks for asking those questions,I have the S500 also and so far I am very dissapointed with the $700 I paid for it when it came out,I bought it because I was told it decoded ALL of the new HD sound formats,Yeah ALL but DTS-HD MA,but I've been wondering myself when they would put out the firmware to fix that problem,So basicly the Sony guy said in so many words NEVER! "just spend your hard earned $ on the new S350 and S550"

It's NOT Sony's fault.

DTS' HD codec is incredibly complex & CPU intensive (UNLIKE TrueHD). Firmware updates cannot overcome that.

So grumbling at Sony over another company's shortcomings is ridiculous.

I look at it another way. DTS-HD MA is decoded by the player (PCM) but can't be sent bitstream. I do have faith in Sony releasing an update to fix the problem.

I for one, do NOT want to see a loss in visual quality because the audiophiles of the world don't wish to buy a new player which supports what ever...

I want Sony to tweak the code the best they can. But if my movie starts skipping or other crap it has never done before, then I won't buy another Sony product if they take this band-aid approach.

My BDP-S300 will never support certain sound codecs, will never have an Internet connection, and probably never support the 2.0 spec. You know what, I am fine with that. With the new firmware they have thus provided I am still getting more than for which I paid. Thanks Sony.

I called Sony tech support yesterday and was told that the new S350 & S550 will not support SACD ... bummer!
They said the new players will be out "by October".
Oh well, guess it's the Panny BD50 for me!

i lucked out in this area. i got the ps3 to play games. i fell into blu ray because of it and have more movies than games. the updates have been great and i will be getting a s350 in the future. i just hope that its as fast as the ps3. the early models that may or may not have features that are available now is no ones fault. thats the price for any new technology or format on the market you buy into early. im not going to cry that the computer i bought two years ago isnt as fast as the new computers today.
