Default Good News, Bad news !!! (Sony BDP-S1)

Greeting Forum Members,

I just got off the phone with the eastern seaboard Sony distributor and I was told the Sony BDP-S1 will be in stores before the Holiday shopping season (Thanksgiving through the end of the year). That's the good news !!

From their perspective, it appears that the Sony BDP-S1 will not achieve its mid to end of October goal, but will reach a realistic introduction date on or before the 15th. of November. That's the bad news !!!

Others in this A/V industry who are members of this Forum may want to affirm this with your supplier and confirm or deny this revelation.

Hmmm, where's my Pioneer Elite Blu-Ray Player ? Any date on it ???

Jim

The PS3 launches on November 17.

Any of you think these dates are just coincidences?

LOL, how do you figure? This is all before Christmas here. Right in time for the holiday crunch that is that final month before Christmas. That's the only time period that truly matters in this whole thing for this year.

I'm not surprised at all by any of this. If anything, it goes more along the lines of what I've been hoping for: A unified BD "launch" that has pretty much all the new BD hardware, including the PS3, come out around the same time, more or less.

Again: No one here wants a rush job done. BD needs to come out strong and right, so if it means nothing comes out until around November, so be it.

Had I not purchased the HD-A1 i'd be totally pissed right now.

as i've been wanting this damn BDP-S1 forever!

Being that I have something (HD-A1) i'm okay with waiting a few more weeks.

I just hope the Sony is everything i've hoped it would be and more!

Bestbuy.com has been sending out e-mails to people who pre-ordered that said 11/13. Circuit city also has an available date of early November.

Makes perfect sense.

I know people are getting antsy, but I think this is potentially very good news.

Get it done right. Take your time. Have the unified launch.

Default Sony release date

I have mine ordered directly from Sony. I called today to ask about their estimated shipping date since I was hearing rumors that it might be postponed until Nov. 17th. They pulled up my order # and still have it listed on their computer (SonyStyle customer service) as being scheduled to ship on October 25th.

Hope that's true, and will just have to wait and see.

Looking at the website, I see that we have 4 new blu-ray players for an October launch. I think that this month will be the month when blue ray will take shape following November. If any of these players require firmware updates, I think that it's best that the player comes out first and then the firmware updates come out over the coarse of a year. It's like updating windows xp, microsoft spits out the updates when needed.

i do not believe this to be best at all. i want a product that when i set it down, it works perfect. yes, there is more technology in these players so an update here or there is fine. however, if this becomes a monthly thing, forget it.

This is a perfect example of "bleeding edge" versus "leading edge" people. "Bleeding edge" people want the newest and greatest stuff and have the attitude of "once I get it I'll make it work". "Leading edge" people want the newest and greatest stuff and have the attitude "once I get it it had better work as advertised". Both are very valid and necessary attitudes for any new technology.

I suspect the Blu-ray ecosystem will be in the transition from "bleeding ege" to "leading edge" over the next few months.

shadow, perfectly valid. my opinion (at this point) is that they took their time to get it right, let's not rush it now and have screwy firmware. most of the time, i am a bleeding edge candidate. but let's bust out the big guns now and end this war with superb hardware and software.

if we take the time to make it right, this will end quickly and we'll all get the hi-def content we want

I think that it's better to release a blu-ray player and then release updates as time goes on. I could apply the same idea towards windows xp and windows vista. I think that the wait will be well worth it once blu-ray gets up to speed.

Question

Will it do 1080i over componet? I only have 1 hdmi input that is already being used for my cable, I just wanted to know if there was any advantage to getting a switcher, which I already have, and two more hdmi cables? My 360 does 1080i over componet so will I really need to get the hdmi cables?

Wow, that's discouraging.

The last thing I want to see is anything analogous to a Windows OS, especially in the world of home theater, audio/video, and consumer electronics in general.

It's a double-edged sword:

Yes, it's good to be able to have firmware updates and what not, but like folks in the PC world have known for years now: This also gives the "excuse" to rush out products and then hope to play "catch up" afterwards.

This is a trend I loathe and dread. It's the downside of the Internet.

The player will do 1080i over component, just not 1080p. The only problem that will arise is if and when ICT flag is enabled, then component output could be limited to 540p.

Visited the Boston-area SonyStyle yesterday, and the sales clerk assured my 10/25 is still the expected date. Of course I don't believe him.

Saw their demo BDP-S1 unit. Pretty sweet looking! If things don't work out between me and the Panny, I'll certainly give the Sony a shot.
