Default The reason there will be Dynamic in-game adds on the PS3 and what I think about it.

Sony will be incorporating Dynamic In-Game ads on PS3 games.

Sony has enlisted the marketing firm IGA Worldwide for the job of creating these adds. Also, IGA Worldwide is now the exclusive ad provider for all Electronic Arts games developed and published for the PS3.

Don't jump to any crazy conclusions! There is a very good reason for Sony's decision to incorporate these adds. The adds cover the cost of the FREE PSN online service.

I say, bring on the adds!!! I welcome them with open arms. I see this as a great trade. We get PSN service Free, they get to run ads. I'm fine with this decision. I knew it was coming back in 2006 when Sony announced that PSN would be Free. Very smart business decision.

In a world where the corporation giants step on the consumer as if they were ants 99% of the time, this decision to run dynamic in-game adds is a decision I can be happy about because if favors the gamer. The bottom line is, it saves us money!

What do you think?

I'll take the adds. I don't want to pay for the service. PS2 was $2 a year for online service. I can live with that. I dumped my XBL after I got my PS3 because of the monthly charge.

As long as they don't slow down the game with constant updates and are tasteful I'm all for it. I would prefer the option to allow you to pay a yearly fee though to not have them if they are obnoxious.

It all depends on how they are used. If it's used to update the banners and billboards in a game like Gran Turismo, then that is all fine. But if God of War 3 comes out and Kratos runs past a giant Nike billboard, then there's going to be issues. Likewise if some PS3 "update" rolls out and I suddenly have to sit through a commercial every time I start up the PS3 or launch the Playstation Store, I will not be happy.

Also, in a way it doesn't matter, but if the loading screens start getting filled with advertisements I will not be happy. It will make me wonder if those load screens are necessary or just a way to provide ad space.

Again, it all comes down to how they are used. If they suit the games environment, that is fine. If you happen upon a TV in a game and end up having to sit through a 30 second ad without being able to break out of it, that is not good. Likewise, fantasy settings really have little place for modern advertising.

I agree with you. If the PS store gets flooded with ads then thats bad! But, if done in a stylish way I could live with it. Like NFS games where theres billbords and such. I believe the first Sony game to do this will be The Agency.

But what if there is a problem like if you're playing Madden online, your opponent is just 2 points up with seconds left on the clock and you're going for a field goal. Just when your about to hit it...an ad similar to those on IGN pops up. You miss your field goal, and your opponent has a field day. If in game pop ups ever happen, I will never play online again. Well thats just how I picture it, I hope I don't give any games publishers trolling the forum any ideas.

I'm not too sure why everyone is complaining. They aren't charging you to update your system or play online.

The only things they are charging you for is stuff that didn't come with your purchases. Heck, they are even offering you free stuff that you don't even have to pay for such as demos and trailers.

They sent out an update for my GTAIV and I didn't have to pay for it other than my cable bill which didn't change because I got it.

My point is that they aren't charging you for stuff that is required to play these games so why complain that you aren't getting stuff that you didn't pay for?

As a lot of people that live on their own realize that everything in this world eventually comes with a price tag, so it will not be a huge shocker if one day they start charging us to use the PSN because after all it is a business.

I doubt they will be pop up ads. More like ingame billboards. For example if you were playing Rainbow6 Vegas 2, instead of the generic ads in the convention center level, the adds would be for real products, like Dell computers or new movies etc. The adds would change daily or weekly most likely. That and we could see ads in PSN store for new games or movies coming out.

If the ads are "product placement," I don't mind. If they are intrusive, I do.

As to paying for PSN, I don't care. I pay about $4 a month for XBL, which is nothing. That's not even one gallon of gas where I live.

Wow. How did this thread end up in a debate over English, grammar and math? HAHA.
Anyway...if the ads are on big billboards and banners or something while your running around Home, that's fine. Prototype, I believe, is supposed to have giant real-world billboards. Not a problem. Like was stated earlier, as long as there are no non-skip able videos when you log into basic functions, it should be ok.

exactly. Why the F would you want to have ads ruin your game experience? Just Sonybots who like the idea. If it was anyone else, they would be laughing and making fun of it.

Nobody's saying they want ads to ruin their game experience.

No more arguing, silly namecalling, any of it.

Games with a particular theme like ICO or Shadow of the Colossus will likely never incorporate ads. Games like Burnout show ads on in-game billboards which makes perfect sense as long as they're tasteful. The ads in a game like Free Realms (Sony Online Entertainment) are more regular and intrusive because the game is given away totally for free.

I'm not a sonybot, but I understand the economics of the idea, if the game developer can make more money on top of what we pay for it, they're going to do it wether we like it or not. Yeah it sucks to pay 50$ for a game, and then have ads while I'm playing the game. If it's mostly for online games, I would understand it more, since it would go to pay for the maintenance and servers of the free service. I would balk more at having to see them for something I've already paid for though.

A good example would be this: Network TV you receive free over the air, and has commercials. Pay Channels like HBO which you specifically pay a monthly fee for doesn't have commercials. They are just moving that form of advertisement into gaming, which they are finally realizing is becoming a large part of peoples lives.

If the ads are what people believe them to be, just In game Banners and Billboards, or maybe print ads during Loading would be ok. As long as it's not having to watch a whole advertisement before loading up the PS Store or anything like that. Anyways, it's not like we can really do anything about it, the amount of people that would be turned off of using the Store probably wouldn't equal the amount of money they make from the ads

Looks like we'll be getting them on EASports games first. Probably in a scrolling Ticker form like ESPN News & MSNBC have at the bottom of you TV screen.

Since the ads are dynamic I highly doubt we'll see them during load time. That would be almost impossible since they're dynamic.

They could be shown on the stadium jumbo-tron. That would be able to hold a dynamic ad.

I vote c, having real ads in appropriate places adds a extra level of realism.. by the way ads is spelled ad not add and, that concludes another episode of "Spelling Police"

Char Aznable: One does not care to remember the mistakes of one's youth.
