Default Paramount first to hit $1 billion in 2008!

Paramount First To Hit $1 Billion For 2008

The half-year got off to a strong start with JJ Abrams’ thriller Cloverfield earning $80M. Paramount was further buoyed by the blockbuster successes of Marvel Entertainment’s Iron Man ($305M), Lucas Films' and Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ($291M) and DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda ($156M – which this weekend surpassed Horton Hears A Who! to become the year’s third top grossing film to this point).

Paramount’s forthcoming openings this year include DreamWorks’ Tropic Thunder starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., and Jack Black (August 15, 2008), Paramount Vantage’s American Teen (July 25, 2008), DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar Escape to Africa (November 7, 2008) and Paramount’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett (Christmas Day).

They are having a very good year. I'm glad they're blu!

they're going to end up getting crushed with the WB Dark Knight, Harry Potter combo. Harry Potter will do close to a billion world wide alone.

There is still a part of me that still has it out for paramount.

As much as many here won't admit, if they release the GF trilogy this year, they will be the Blu studio of the year IMO.

Cloverfield
TWBB
Bee Movie
Beowulf
Sweeney
Iron Man
Kung Fu Panda
Top Gun
TF
GF trilogy (maybe)
Indiana Jones 4 (maybe)
Madagascar
Spiderwick
Jack Ryan movies
Drillbit Taylor
The Ruins
Shrek 3

and I am sure there are some that are not announced.

That is alot of quality IMO.

You're probably right, but Paramount's billion is domestic only. Plus they still have Madagascar 2 and Tropic Thunder. Usually all the main studios pass $1 billion domestically each year. Paramount has the advantage of owning Dreamworks (for now)

Strange huh? Definitely looking forward to it, the last one was my favorite so far. Just wish there could have been more Gary Oldman...

Man, 1 billion seems like ALOT for less than 6 months.

But yeah WB will be there undoubtedly eventually this year.

New Line is part of WB (so it counts for them). I wish they would've posted a progress report for the top studios. It'd be kind of interesting.

How much does Paramount get from Iron Man and Indiana Jones? I thought that they were just distributing those films for Marvel and Lucas. They won't get as big as if it was something they produced.

You're right. For any studio, they don't get much of the gross. Paramount as a company has to pay Marvel and Lucasfilm. I don't know the particulars of the deals made however. But, having said that, they are making money on films in which they didn't have to invest heavily.

well, it wouldn't be the first time paramount fudged their numbers a bit, remember transformers dvd/hd dvd sales figures.

considering that those are their two big movies, paramount might not even be close to 1 billion.

Actually all of their biggest hits, Indy, Ironman, Kungfu Panda are just distribution deals. Their big summer movie that they get the most profit from just bombed, The Love Guru with $14m this weekend.

But like others said, they are still pulling in some decent dough, just not $1b.
