Not sure about VCD, but I'm going to guess no.
About AVI... technically it's not a format, it's a container. So the answer is "maybe". Most .avi files you find on the internet are divx/xvid video and aac/mp3 audio. In this situation, you're 99.9% guaranteed it will play. The reason is that the PS3 is divx certified, but I've encountered 1 or 2 files that it will not play. xvid is an open-source implementation of divx, and I've not encountered any xvid file that the PS3 would not play. |

Definily cant play VCD. PS2 was not able to play VCD either. I am wondering of its posssible to fix with an update but again SONY might not even consider since VCD is not an official format of any kind. Basically its just video file upload to an CD disc.

There are free programs that let you strip the .mpeg file out of a VCD you own and then you can put that on a external HD to watch. Just google it and you should find one right away. The quality won't be great but at least you can watch the movies you own on the PS3.

Easy enough, put the VCD into your computer, drag out the video file, add a ".mpeg" or ".mpg" at the end, and done. Copy that file into the PS3, it should play fine. (I hope.)
There's also a small program that can convert VCD data files to mpeg in less than a blink of a second. And it's free too. I forgot what it's call though. Last edited by Blu-Generation; 10-28-2008 at 08:08 PM. |

google for
mkv2vob and ps3 video converter. mkv2 vob is what i use to mux(convert, for those, like myself, not video savvy) the common torrent movies in HD that come in .mkv container. it even splits it in 4GB pieces to be compatible w/ your FAT32 PS3 HDD and ps3 video converter will strip anything fromm anything that has video into a format playable on your PS3. not recommended for muxing HD .mkv movies. |
