Question question about movie format

im looking through some bd movie info here at the site. and, some are either mpeg-2/mpeg-4/vc-1. my question is. what the difference between all the formats? im probably gonna get flamed for not knowing this.

I have done AVC and MPEG 2 encoding with no ability for VC1 encoding. I have seen AVC to be superior to MPEG2, and from what I have gathered from reading stuff on the net, VC1 would probably slot under AVC and above MPEG2.

AVC and VC-1 are almost identical, although few studios are using VC-1 and the ones that are are bit-starving it. With a proper transfer VC-1 and AVC should both be nearly identical.

MPEG-2 is the old standard being passed over for MPEG-4(AVC and VC-1).
