Default h264 files (in mkv packed format)...Can it be burned to BD as a movie?

I have several hd movie files I wish to burn to BD so they will play in most blu-ray players. Trouble is that these files are not in formats readily burnable as BD. They are in formats like .h264 packed in .mkv type files. They have names like: crank.2006.720p.hdtv.multi.x264 . Does this explain the type of files? I am currently only able to use VLC player for playback and now that I have a BD burner it would be so cool to author these HD files to BD. I would then buy a stand-alone Blu-Ray player and watch them on my larger screen systems.

I need the expert help here to give me a real "Dummie-Style" walk-through of exactly how to do this. Yes, I mean "idoit proof" as this stuff seems complicated to me. I'd be ever grateful. Please email me with any instructions or post it here. THANKS!
