Default Subwoofer Setting on my reciever.

There are two options to set my subwoofer on. "Double Bass mode and LFE Only (THX)." What is the difference between the two? Its very confusing. I don't know what to make of it. I play plot of PS 3 games andw3atch a ton of movies.

I was playing the MLB the Show earlier today with the receiver set to LFE only and the sub was on and sounding awesome. Also watched The Bucket list on this setting last night and the sub was working well. Then when I play GTA the subwoofer does not kick on. I then switch the settings on the reciever to Double Bass from LFE (THX) and its working good again.

What gives? anyone know what setting I should leave it on and why the subwoffer only works on a certian setting with different media?

Thanks for ANY advice/help!!!

I am not sure about GTA, but I know that when playing Rock Band there is no signal sent to the LFE channel. My sub shuts off (power standby) when playing some games.

HMM I wonder why that is, what is LFE exactly? So is it good to always have it set to Double Bass. I also noticed when playing music off my ps3, the sub would not kick on when set to LFE either.

LFE = Low-frequency effect... basically the .1 channel in your 5.1 or 7.1 system

i dont know why but some games only seem to output the .1 channel when its in a 2.1 situation... just do double-bass for music/games and LFE for movies

vey strange, LFE works well with MLB 08 the show. I guess it has to do with if the games are encoded with the .1 (in the 5.1 or 7.1?)

I know GTA only has surround sound in the option menu, not DD 5.1 or 7.1

LFE is for Low-Frequency Effects

I'm assuming the "double bass" and "LFE only" mode are for your receiver (an Onkyo receiver?). For most normal applications, the "LFE only" setting would be the correct one.

The Double Bass setting is to "boost bass output by feeding front left and right channel bass sounds to the subwoofer" (Quote from the Onkyo manual).

I don't remember if GTA had a LFE track (maybe I should play videogames sometimes...) but basically if a game or movie has no LFE track (or a quiet one) then the Double bass setting would allow you to get some bass from the subwoofer by sending some data from the front channels.

Also did you set up your sub as described in the Guide to Subwoofers: Characteristics, Placement, Adjustments, & Manufacturers thread? Maybe some of your settings are not optimal.

Hope this helps!
