Default I can't get any sound out of my Onkyo TX-SR 805

Ok, I've got a brand new Onkyo TX-SR 805 that is not outputting any sound. I've got video working via s-video and HDMI but I can't get sound to work no matter what I do.

All I have hooked up are front left and right speakers. First I tried using the HDMI audio input and nothing. Then I tried using RCA plugs driven from my laptop and nothing. So to eliminate a few variables, I tried using both the AM and FM tuners on both mono and stereo and still nothing. The receiver definitely finds my local radio stations so I know the tuner is working. One thing that I find very strange is that when I go to the setup menu item # 2, which is the "speakers" section, is in grayed out and I cannot select it.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Mark

Hi Mark

Why not try going over the operations manual again thoroughly. Perhaps
you have missed out some connection guidance. You used your laptop
to connect to the amp for playback BD disc well that's a first !

Go thru the manual again slowly I am sure you missed something.

Hi Mark

Just went online to Onkyo website and looked into your 805 operations
manual briefly. This model has multi zone capability meaning you can
connect to two other rooms to enjoy stereo audio.Perhaps you should
check your speakers connection. Your speakers should be connected to
your first main zone that is the 7.1 channels if you are going to watch HT.

But in your post you mentioned that you have a pair of fronts so I guess
you might have connected to either zone 2 or zone 3. If I am not wrong
you must see which connections you are using and then enable it either
zone 2 or 3. Hope this helps.

LOL...that was pretty funny, Leon...

Perhaps he needs to go into the HARDWARE SETUP menu and take HDMI AUDIO OUT off? This was a problem in my '605...in order to get sound from the speakers connected to the receiver, that "HDMI AUDIO" selection in Hardware Setup under the setup menu must be off...

There is another feature on the Onkyos that is very helpful for this, too, now that you mentioned the volume...the OP said there was no sound at all, if I'm not mistaken, so I think it's something else, but...

Under SOURCE SETUP or something like that in the setup menus of Onkyos, there's a feature called INTELLI-VOLUME (which actually has been in use in older Onkyos, too; my TX-SR600 had it) which is supposed to be a volume-leveling device for each input, but I use it more as like a "power amp gain control" in that I jacked up my "DVD" input, which I use to play all films in my theater, to a value of "+10"...this makes the receiver's amps come to life a lot earlier in the gain stage and makes the overall sound punchier -- like turning up a power amp's gain; I used to run and recommend the IntelliVolume control on the max of +12dBs, but that's unnecessarily high, like it would be if you turned a power amp's gain all the way up, so +10 makes a nice comprimise so the internal amps aren't clipped or possibly overloaded...

I set the Intelli-Volume for my DVD players to +3db which I felt was sufficent. It enable me to really enjoy the dynamic audio from the sources connected.

I suppose you can use +3; I just crank mine up because I REALLY like the gain stage to begin early in Onkyo's volume range -- on my 605, depending on the hour of night and the kind of film I'm playing, sometimes 30 to 35 is loud enough on the volume display, and that's thanks to Onkyo's IntelliVolume!

How long do you have your Onkyo equipment, Aramis? Yes, go into SOURCE SETUP in the menu and select INTELLI-VOLUME...it's something every receiver should have IMO...

Yes, something good DID come from this thread...I just wonder if the OP is still waiting for an answer to his original question about no sound.....

I liked that also. I think it takes a warped brain to appreciate it! Im one of the biggest smart asses I know! the dude probably had his speakers hooked to the wrong terminals and if not, and there was no sound from the tuner, it probably would be the receiver.

LOL....

Or, it's like I said, he has that "HDMI Audio Out" switched on, if he's using HDMI audio at all...

Why are we still discussing this anyway, Addict and everyone else? This guy asks for advice and doesn't even come back here to reply or read the replies we gave him...

Guess Leon will have to ask again if there's any sound coming from him...

About two weeks, so I'm allowed to find out about stuff like that later on.

And yes, while I had heard of intelli-volume, I had mistakenly thought it was just a setting that would keep the volume more modulated and not allow it to get too loud or quiet.

Leon's reply was side splitting but I don't think it's funny that people like you and I and others in this thread tried to help and he didn't seem to care...

But oh well...at least we got some chuckles from it.
