I have the Onkyo 805 and whenever I watch a BD movie I have to turn the volume on the reciever all the way up to -26 for the bd to sound good, is that normal? it doesn't seem like it should be, I mean at-26 the reciever is turned almost to full volume. Help!

The Onkyo volume system goes up in very small steps (0.5dB) so it can seem like you're cranking the volume a LOT when in reality you're not. The range on reference level is from -80dB to +15dB so -26 isn't even close to full range.
I usually set it to -30dB for listening to music and -20dB for movies (sometimes louder depending on my mood). |

When I had my Onkyo 805 I was always in the -24 to -19 range with BDs, and usually -13 to -11 with music. The other thing to consider is if you engaged the Audyssey EQ, it may have readjusted the tonal quality of your speakers down a bit in the higher frequencies to compensate for room reflections and/or if you have bright speakers. As a result you may have to turn the volume up a few db more than if the EQ were at the default flat setting.
Anyway, like the others said, don't sweat it at -26 you're nowhere near reference levels. |

Thanks guys, you made me feel alot better about my recent purchase, I originally had a yamaha rxv-1600, and decided to go with the onkyo because of the new sound formats, and so far I've been very happy with it except for the fact that I keep thinking I'm going to max out the volume,i mean damn it has what, 130 watts per ch? do you guys find yourselves turning up your center ch levels while watching bds? I have mine at +4, is that normal?

As for the Bd loudness if you want in the "audio settings" you can choose the input then adjust the sound level to match all of your other equipment. |
