Default Hook-up help!

Here's my current basic set-up:

Sony Playstation 3 connected to Samsung LCD via HDMI. Cable box connected to Samsung LCD via HDMI.

I have an old receiver Sony DA50ES (5.1 and no HDMI) that I would like to incorporate into the set-up and hook a Klipsch Quintet II that I will be picking up today (Craigslist, $150).

Okay, it's been a while since I put together a system and I have forgotten the basics. How do I hook this up?

Well hopefully your amp has optical inputs and your tv has and optical out.
If you have these options it's as simple as tv to amp, then whatever you are watching will be output to the amp.
If not you'll have to go PS3 to amp and cable box to amp with the hopefully extra existing digital outputs of these two devices.

Since the receiver isn't capable of HDMI connection, does that mean that I will lose the HDMI quality that I currently enjoy (PS3 via HDMI and cable box via HDMI)? Or is there a way to keep this connection and somehow just run the audio/speakers through the receiver? Sorry, if I am not explaining as apparently I'm a technoidiot. Thanks.

You can just run the HDMI to the TV for video and run the optical to the receiver for audio. You just need to specify that in the PS3 audio output settings- set the optical to Bitstream.

Ok. I think I understand.

To confirm, this is what I'll do:

(a) cable box will remain directly connected to the LCD via HDMI.

(b) PS3 will remain directly connected to LCD via HDMI.

(c) speakers (2 fronts, 2 rears and 1 center) connected to the receiver.

(d) receiver is connected to the LCD via optical cable.

Am I missing anything else?

Thats it. Go to your HDTV menu and turn the HDTV internal MUTE ON.

Aramis, why do you have to set the PS3 audio output settings to optical Bitstream if you are using an HDMI from the PS3 to the HDTV? Would this tell the PS3 to send sound over the Optical cable even thow it is not connected from the PS3 to the TV?

You may need to run the optical cable from the Cable and PS3 to the receiver. Some TVs will not pass 5.1 digital via the TV's optical out.
I have a samsung DLP tv that will pass antenna signal sound via optical out in 5.1 format, but via all the other inputs (including HDMI), it will only pass 2 channel PCM. So you would loose the 5.1. Before I upgraded to my hdmi capable receiver I had to run optical from the PS3 and coaxial digital from the cable box to the receiver as my older receiver only had 1 optical and 1 coaxial digital inputs.
