Default PS3, PSP and a receiver with extra zones, is this a godlike setup?

Like all good ideas, this came to me while in the shower. I was thinking it would be nice to be able to hear my mp3 collection while in the morning shower, and thought about setting up a playlist and putting some outdoor waterproof speakers in the bathroom.

Then I was thinking how cool would it be with a waterproof PSP mounted in the bathroom so I could pick my songs and have them stream out of the PSP's shitty speakers.

Then I realized I could combine the two, obviously, the PSP isn't waterproof, but what if you put some outdoor speakers on the deck, had them attached to a secondary zone on your receiver, then had the PS3 set with remote play to play sound from the PS3. Then you walk out with your PSP, and can select any song you want and listen to it while you grill or just read a book outside. It would be essentially a wireless remote you could take anywhere you have wireless internet - and read your selection off of it.

Sounds like a good idea. Let us know if it works out.

I thought about doing that. It's a good idea. I still have my Onkyo HT-SR505 lying in my closet. I might just hook it up to the speakers on my deck outside and replace the other old amplifier currently out there. That amp used to be good and now it's falling apart. If I hook my receiver up out there, then I'm going to need to make an online trip to Monoprice for some speaker wire and some banana plugs!

personally I wouldn't leave it hanging right under the shower stream just in case you didn't seal it all the way. but you could keep it close by on a towel rack or something?

Maybe mount the waterproof case in the tub to the side away from where the stream would be going directly, then when going to the shower, take PSP with and stick into the mounted case. Then assign Zone A to be the bathroom, and zone B to be the porch.

Not about time/money for functionality only, but for the fun of doing the project.

But I mean, you could hear the music more than just in the shower - brushing your teeth, doing #2, sensual bath /w lady friend, ext.

I don't have a pool myself, but was just thinking that it would be a pretty damn nice setup, to use a waterproofed PSP as a remote for some poolside speakers, getting their audio from the remote played PS3. Makes me wanna go out and buy a pool... or a hot tub. ;o

I have 4 AVRs currently not in use.... I'm planning on using one to run some exterior "gazebo" speakers..... same could be done for a bathroom I suppose.... not sure I'd use "outdoor" speakers.... maybe just a couple tiny satellite speakers (that are cheap) above the mirror etc..... sure the moisture 'may' damage them EVENTUALLY.... but for $30 or $40 for a pair of junky speakers.... You could do that 5 times before you hit the cost of waterproof speakers (and they're smaller!)

If you're looking for good quality, low cost speakers, look here. You can use it for outdoors too.

Edit: It looks like Circuit City doesn't have them available online now. They go for $150 at Crutchfield and other online stores. I got these for $28 with free shipping. They cost a bit more now, but they sound very good for outdoors. They definitely have to be broken in before you crank them and they accept 12 gauge wire and banana plugs. Their bass works strangely, as it sounds boomy very close up but much more accurate and fuller when you're further away. Other than that little quirk, their performance is excellent.

Well I checked out circuit city, best buy and tweeter, and ended up with the cheapest set they had, a $30 pair of Insignias. Got home, not getting any sound, trying to fiddle with the zone settings. Apparently I don't get digital or something along those lines, which is pretty bad considering... everything I have is connected VIA HDMI or optical except a Wii... Apparently I can also use phono plugs to connect to a zone, which would have been good to know since there are wireless setups I could have used with that though there's no guarantee that would send the digital signal... so I'm thinking now I'll just have to use the 1/4 inch headphone jack somehow...

Already own one of these.

Thinking i'll just put that on the deck and plug into the PSP's headphone jack. It's not going to be the best sound quality... but then again neither would my $15 a piece speaker be.

Going to see if sound will come out if I use the standard def cables to connect to the receiver from PS3.

Ok, it works if I use regular phono plugs. So the insignias work...

Unfortunately... I was planning on sliding the wires out one window and in through the bathroom window, which is completely sealed shut. It feels like the grooves of the window will break off before it slides open. They reach through the hallway but it looks really awful. Thinking about just sliding the wire down to the deck as originally planned for the deck... and maybe going with a shower radio - FM transmitter solution.

Did get one shower with the speakers, and listened to "put on your sunday clothes" in honor of Wall-E.

Alright, spent a little time outside with the speakers. The setup is perfect. Grilled a couple hot dogs and put on some light jazz music and a good book. Unfortunately, I live next to a field and tonight for some reason of all nights like 20 or so young children are camping on it, very loud, impossible to enjoy myself. But the deck setup works great, and the PSP remote is perfect.

I sincerely recommend anyone with their music collection PS3 accessible and a PSP to find a way to output their music on their porch, even with cheapo speakers, it's really quite nice.

Of course the easiest way is probably just playing it directly out of the PSP's headphone jack to something.
