Default The lowest costing 1080p projector is the Epson.

Is it still a good projector?

I'm not so sure the the Epson is the 1080p projector out there with the lowest "street" price. The BenQ W5000, Panasonic PT-AE2000U, Optoma HD80, Sony VPL-VW40, and Mitsubishi HC4900 (an probably others) all have street prices near or below the Epson.

That having been said, the Epson 1080UB (pro or home cinema are the same projector) is an excellent projector and may be the best in this class. The other standout in this group is the Sony VW40. These two appear to have the most accolades amongst this group.

Where are you finding these prices? I would prefer a Sony but they seemed over priced to me...

If I ever replace my current projector I hope to get a VW40 or VW50.

Try www.projectorcentral.com or www.projectorpeople.com or www.visualapex.com for listings of some prices. IMHO, one of the best places to buy a projector is AVS-- their prices are excellent-- always significantly below MSRP (call/email Jason Turk or Richard Fairbrother or Marc Rumsey for a quote)-- and their customer service is outstanding.

BTW, I have no disclosures to make-- I don't work for AVS, but I am a prior (and future) very satisfied customer.

good site to compare 1080p projectors. 1080UB is good, but it certainly isnt head and shoulders above the rest. lots of pros and cons for all projectors.

I've never seen one, but I've always had high hopes for the 1080UB. There's a good review by Thomas Norton just gone up on UltimateAVMag:

http://www.ultimateavmag.com/videopr...ppc/index.html

Apart from a few qualifications about slight misconvergence, and a bit more noise than some others, it's good news all the way. There are no perfect projectors yet, but this is starting to sound like a good bet overall. I'm wondering how it compares with the InFocus X10.

However, I do recall that AVS had to stop selling the Epson as they had so many returns due to MC. I think I'd want a 1080p 3-chip PJ to have pixel adjustment, like the Sony VW60 & JVC HD1.

yeah some of the Mis-convergence pics floating around are truly terrible for the 1080UB. As always, if you get a good one then your set. *if*

But Jason at AVS will most likely check out your unit before shipping. I know there was a pretty good deal going on for the Pro version at AVS. Personally, I would go with the Pro for replacement bulb, included mount, and others. I would shoot Jason an email if you are truly interested.

I want a Epson...But if there are other reasonable projectors that are cheaper, especially at 1080p, then i might just go for it.

Does anyone know how much the Epson 1080UB pro cost right now? Looking for the cheapest price..

Remember that Epson has 3 PowerLite 1080p model projectors with the Non-UB version the least expensive and it sells in the $2K range. The Home 1080UB model sells in the $3K price range and the Pro 1080UB model sells in the $4K price range. While both UB versions are virtually identical in terms of picture quality the Powerlite Home 1080 (non-UB) version is lower in quality (doesn't have good black levels nor contrast ratio). New models from competing manufacturers, such as the Mits HC5500, is priced close to the non-UB Epson but initial reports say it performs similar to the Epson UB models (it uses Epson LCD display panels). The BenQ W5000 (DLP) is also priced closer to the non-UB Epson Powerlite and some people may prefer it over the Epsons (including the UB) even though some people have reported it produces a somewhat noisy image at times but it does produce a very sharp image with real pop.

Don't make the mistake of thinking all 1080p projos are the same. Higher end units give you much more detail in the blacks, better color pallete, better detail and much more depth of field. Decide whether you want a great picture only smaller like a panel or a medicocre big picture. Two schools of thought but make sure you decide on what you really want!

Not sure I'd call any 1080p projector made "mediocre" as far as PQ is concerned..... It's a cheap way to get a BIG picture.... and the 1080p projectors currently made all look great (the ones I've seen) if you get one that works with the room/light you have.

I agree that a projector isn't for everyone, and I'm only entering the "strange and complex" world of them.... I decided on getting a 720p model b/c it was cheap, and basically PQ isn't very important to me anyways, but I'm sure I'll be impressed nonetheless.

Trust me, you won't be disappointed in the HC1500!
