Default Google plugs YouTube into Playstation 3

Quote:
To the surprise of no one, Google is now offering software that streams video, photos, and music from your PC to your television.

"In the old days, we used to watch a simple device called a television. Nowadays, all the stuff worth watching and listening to tends to be stored on or accessed through a computer," writes software engineer David Garcia on the Google Desktop blog. "To help remedy this, we are pleased to release the Google Media Server."

The Google Media Server - available here - is a free Windows app that sends media files to your TV via the Playstation 3 and other Universal Plug-and-Play (UPnP) devices. It works in tandem with Google Desktop, the desktop search tool that also runs various and sundry software widgets known as Google Gadgets.

With help from the Google Media Server, your TV can access videos, music, and photos stored on your PC, and naturally, it can tap straight into YouTube, the video-sharing site where Google hopes to serve an enormous number of advertisements.

Google is already streaming YouTube videos into living room via third-party devices like Apple TV and HP's Media Smart TV. And now it's reaching out for the Playstation 3 crowd.

But this is just a Google beta. And it may go nowhere. Judging from the Google Media Server discussion forums, the new app is hardly ready for prime time. ®

Eh.... am I missing something? PS3 Browser could already access Youtube with no issues at all. Could be better but still worked fine!

I'll check it out tonight. WMP11 does a pretty good job at the moment!

If you are missing something then I'm missing it too.

They want you to stream to your PS3 onto your TV. I'm assuming using a media server that just does that one task. So on your PC you put a bunch of links in the folder and the ps3 will create a thumbnail of that video in your google youtube video section under the media server.

It just means you don't need to browse, you can make a library that is a simple one click away type of thing.

Windows Media Player already does this without the annoying Google Desktop/Toolbars.

Of course it doesn't stream YouTube but your own files stored locally.

I know that. I have 4 servers now. I've dumped all my PC HDD stuff to an external now so have little use for them though.

Making a media server is incredibly easy if you use Windows Media Player.

Awesome, can't wait to try this out on my 80G PS3, but internet access on the PS3 has been a bit disappointing so far.

Yes... yes it is.

Step 1) Turn on PS3 & PC

Step 2) On PC open Windows Media Player

Step 3) Click "Allow" on the pop-up box asking if you want to allow an "Unknown device" to connect. Sadly if you have multiple devices trying to connect you may not know which one to allow for the PS3.

Step 4) Have fun accessing all your shared folders from your PC on your PS3. Just remember to go under the Pictures menu to vew pics, Music menu for music and Video menu for videos because it will not display an MP3 file if you are under the Pictures or Video menu even if you navigate into the correct folder from your PC.

Kind of annoying now that I think about it. Sony could merge the Pictures, Music and Video main menus in the XMB into a "Media" menu then have sub-menus for the Pictures, Music & Videos stored on the PS3. Then when you access a Media Server the PS3 is looking for All Media type files instead of having to back all the way out incase you change your mind from view pictures to listening to music.

LOL. You have selecting reading skills. Please note I have 4, count 4 media servers. The google one allows you to access youtube's directly from the server wirelessly. Can you do that on WM11?

Although it doesn't do a great job of it. It stutters like crap. The documentation has holes in it, and when I say holes I mean like meteor crater sized holes. The options are done through a browser panel similar to your router, then you have to work out all by yourself how to get an account in the first place (www.google.com/accounts) and then when you sign up you can configure the device options.

However, it allows you to configure the folders which can be accessed via the Ps3. On my system it shows "all folders" and no other options. Yet nothing shows up on my PS3.

Compared to using your browser to access youtubes, its slow. I did not get a single youtube to play seamlessly. It would buffer every 2 or 3 seconds. This should not have reached beta stage in its present condition. This in my book is very much alpha. Its barely functional.

I am also concerned of how many things it installs on your PC. Sidebars, tool bars and all sorts are all over the place. I have since uninstalled this gadget, its more like a hindrance.

Are the AVC versions of YouTube vids exclusive to Apple with the iPhone/iPod touch or can they be accessed by other means?

My bad, I had only been flicking through a whole lot of threads and that was just my opinion at the time, I don't use WMP11 as I don't need to.
