Default Quick question 1st time setup Onkyo Audyssey

I have 5 total speakers + sub. So it goes through and correctly identifies my fronts and center. But it only picks up a Surround Back Right and not the left. So obviously I swapped speakers and same thing, only picks up Surround Back Right. But by swapping I know that the problem is not with the speakers because both of them made the zapping noise nor is it my connections. It has to be the Surround Back Left terminal on the receiver?? Any suggestions appreciated

i would play something in surround and check if the audio is coming out of that speaker. put your ear up to it

OK -- good idea...I just unplugged the sub and made sure the terminal posts on the receiver were nice and tight on the back surround left inputs. And still nothing. It then prompts me to either retry or cancel.

Wonder if I used them as Surrounds instead of Surround rears. Would they still be in play for like a 5.1, or should you only use the surrounds in a 7.1 scenario. In other words is there a priority of order you should follow between these two pairs??

sorry there is gonna be lag of me running back and forth....in one minute I will :-) so what you are saying is that in a 5.1 setup, you really should only go with surround rears as opposed to surrounds??

Just for giggles, I plugged the same two speakers into the surrounds terminals and the Audyssey did properly pick them both up....

well if your going to listen to a 5.1 movie which most is, then your going to miss a surround. you cant assign a channel to a terminal

but if surround back/rear L or R is not working and surround L and R is, then 5.1 should be fine. got them mixed up for a sec.

LOL -- I am getting jack from those surround speakers plugged in as rears right now. Maybe I will have to manually adjust them, since the Audyssey mic did not really "Finish"

I just tested it with the opening of SwordFish and it was still absolutely breath taking without them......

So I just ended up adding those two as surrounds and I will have no surround rears. The Audyssey successfully ran it for all 3 positions and is now crunching away at the calculation. I plan on watching Rambo tomorrow, so we shall see how it sounds.

Cool -- well it sounds great with a nice helicopter scene and those two speakers plugged in under the Surround as opposed to the Surround Rear terminals. Appreciate your comments.

Probably should though look into the rears more to make sure its not an actual defect or something . I am just too tired at this point.

thats how it should be... surrounds are for 5.1, surround rears are for 6.1 and 7.1

Yup, was just going to say the same thing. Put them on surround and not surround rear.

Enjoy the Onk!
