Thumbs up 2001: Aso ...... Wow.

My 2001: ASO came today. I only spot played it on my Sony S300 and sad to say, it worked. I am sad that it worked because the picture is phenominal! Wow, it could have been made 4 years ago, instead of 40 it is so good.

Now I am sorry I bounced through the movie spot checking nearly every scene. Hope it doesn't ruin the experience. <Does mind purge.>

So Thursday night starts my July 4th weekend with 2001: ASO. And July 4th with Independence Day. Who needs fireworks?

Where is a HAL emote when you need one?

That is my HAL 9000 I built. Took months to get the thing.

I couldn't agree more about 2001. It is my second favorite blu-ray, second only to Blade Runner.

I love this movie too, especially the PQ which in my opinion is a reference quality transfer. 2001:ASO was the first Blu-ray I bought after buying my BD player.

With all due respect to Blu-ray, nothing comes close to reproducing the orignial 1968 release in the theaters. My parents took me when I was a young boy around 9 years old. The theaters back then are not common today, sadly. It had a really huge curved screen that dwarfs your common neighborhood theater screens of today. The 3-D effect of 2001:ASO projected on that screen was phenomenal and completely awed me especially during the space sequences, all I can see is, Wow! I felt like I was floating in space, but I guess it was more awesome to me being a young kid. You might get near the same experience at an IMAX digital 3D theater which I heard has a huge screen, but I have never seen one.

I have it as well as all of Kubrick's films that are so far on Blu-Ray. Haven't gotten around to actually watching it, but I know I will get to it eventually.

But in terms of seeing it in the theater, I have had the good luck to actually see it on the big screen. In Regina, there used to be this multiplex in the downtown area called the Coronet. I only ever went to it a handful of times, since when the Cineplex Odeon in the Southland Mall opened up, and then the Galaxy came in a few years later, business kind of dried up and it became a second run theater. But in 2003, the last year it was open, I think the manager there decided just for the hell of it, that they not only started showing indies there, but they had kind of a retro series as well. And I was lucky enough to see not only RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and AKIRA on the big screen, but also 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.

And it's true. You really haven't seen 2001 until you've seen it on the big screen. It just envelops you and really blows your mind to see it's visuals and comprehend it's meaning on the big screen. So I have managed to cross off one movie on my "must see on the big screen". The other two are LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.

If you love sci-fi, then yes. Pick it up. Keep in mind it is nearly 2:30 long and the pace is slow.

Just in skipping through the scenes I became slightly emotional at the powerfulness of the scenes and quality. I think after watching it tonight I will drop to my knees and thank GOD for Stanley Kubrick.

I will say this.... 2001 is not a movie for everyone. It has a very different flow and is not an action film. it is suspense and Sci-Fi in its truest form.
It is one of my favorite movies of all time, and has amazed everyone I have ever shown it to on Blu-ray. I really should show it off more often this way.
It is too bad so many younger people don't appreciate it. I am young myself (almost 27), but I am unlike most people my age, and this kind of film really inspires me.
You will love it. The PQ is phenomenal. The AQ is perfect! The story is a classic.

I don't think it has anything to do with people's age. I know many young people who appreciate this film and I know many old people who despise it.

2001 is a must have.

As good as 2001 looks, just think of how good new movies would look if they were filmed in the same 65mm process.

Instead, a growing number of Hollywood "filmmakers" are ate up with that empty and almost meaningless "digital" buzz word and choosing to shoot in video, dropping the image quality level a step below 35mm. It's stupid, short-sighted thinking.

Movies like 2001 and Lawrence of Arabia are fairly future-proofed because they were filmed in 65mm instead of 35mm. Years from now some super-duper new video format could come along and those old movies would transfer easily to it due to the immense levels of detail on their original negatives. That isn't true for "digital" movies. They're stuck with whatever pixel count that video camera generated.

Just out of curiousity, what is that pixel level? On the average digital shot movie, I mean.

Most "digital" movies are shot in standard HDTV resolution. 1920 X 1080 pixels. Some don't even have that level of detail. For instance the Panavision/Sony camera system used on Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones was significantly under HDTV resolution. It was refined to at least deliver 1080p quality for Episode III. Some movies, like 28 Days Later were videotaped in mere standard definition -no point in buying that kind of movie on Blu-ray.

Film has a greater capacity for image detail in part because its imagery isn't subject to the coarse Bayer pattern limitations of a pixel grid.

The E-Film website has an interesting article showing visual proof that regular 4-perf 35mm film can see great benefits from 6K scanning and 4K digital intermediate processing. The 5-perf 65mm format has 250% more film negative area than a full 4-perf 35mm film frame.

Lucky or not, I'm old enough to have seen the premiere of 2001:ASO when I was in my early 20s and have owned it in every format that has come out since. It's refreshing to see that there are still people out there of varying ages who appreciate the movie. I'm also happy to hear that the BD of it is that good. I'll certainly be adding it to my collection. I just ordered a PS3 (about 50% for the BD player), so am eager to find good action movies that are worth watching in this new, enhance format.

The PQ is likely the best among older movies (this movie was released in 1968 for crying out loud) I've seen thus far. All in all, a classic sci-fi movie that gets the best treatmeat in BD, nice.

Thumbs up Has stood the test of time.

I watched it last night and the picture quality was FLAWLESS. There were only the briefest of moments where I might have noticed a bit of inconsistency from how the film was cut. But it is sheer fluff to make mention of it.

Aside from the lack luster monkey suits, 2001: A Space Odyssey has withstood the test of time. It is media for the Gods and mere mortal eyes must not gaze upon its greatness. Lest they not understand the brilliance of Stanley Kubrick's monolithic genius.

To have 2001: ASO in your BD collection is a statement of your own artful, intellect.

With that said, I believe this film has some influence on the movie TRON. Near the end of 2001 when he passes through the light tunnel, the visual concepts, landscaping and even musical tonations reminded me of the end of TRON when power was restored to the system. I believe Wendy Carlos, creator of TRON's music, was influenced by 2001: A Space Odyssey. As well as the creators of the digital landscape.

Here is a link where you can find a graphic of the monolith and ape to print, cut-n-paste. Many other things too!
