Unhappy Hum noise on Onkyo TX-SR705!!!

Yes, is that normal? I can hear from my spot an unpleasant noise. What a surprise! DVR? Nooo,PS3? Nooo, Onkyo? Yes. What? I begin to love my 705 and what is that. Is that normal?

I can tell you that "no" it's not normal....

I'd guess a bad Amp, but that's just a guess. That's if it's coming from the actually AVR, and not a speaker.

sounds like the receiver tanked...

remove all inputs then listen

my best guess is that the power supply went south
JUST to be sure, move the amp to another room and plug it in
still have the hum ???? = bad receiver.
no hum ??? maybe broken wire in recepticle

yeah, you need to give them at least 6-7 inches I'd say.... and if it's generally "hot" in your place right now... I'd say even more......

my receiver gets hot during hot days and i use the button combinations to display temp. i also emailed onk to find out what the max temp that the 705 can safely handle and i got.....

Thank You for contacting Onkyo USA Product Support.

There is no max temperature, the receivers do run about 80 degrees above the ambient room temperature. You can add a fan at any time or temperature you feel it is needed.

Okay, now that you've gotten some actual helpful posts in here I won't feel bad about saying "Maybe it's just humming because it doesn't know the words".

so they KNOW the thing wasn't built to handle the heat..... basically. On My PS3 in the living room, the fan kicked on HIGH yesterday playing a movie.... so I turned it off.... I'm not burning it up, just to deal with sending it in etc. I took the movie into the bedroom where it was cooler (closer to an AC vent too)

from wiiki i got ambient temp is almost the same as room temp that is comfortable to humans that goes up to about 75F. 80 degrees above that is pretty damn hot. so i think it can handle heat but not excessive, no component can.

Yeah that is extremely high temps if it goes 80 degrees above.. wow.... I can't imagine them designing it to run that hot.. That is very close to the melting temps of the some of those chips...

Does the hum sound like a ground fault. If so you may have a bad cable or one that is shorting to ground. That will cause a very loud hum. Your phone will do the same thing on rainy days if there is a cable ground fault.
