MLB '08: The Show Online is poor experience

Aside from the spotty refresh/frame rates during game play, the one thing that deters me from wanting to play online: the other players.

I've played 7 games. Two games were 'good' games where both sides played 'clean' and fair throughout the whole game. I lost 7-2 and won 4-2.

However, here's what happened in the other 5 games:
- 2 of the games ended with the other player quitting. One quit after giving up 4 runs in the 6th inning (was losing 6 to 1). The other player quit in the 9th with 2 outs on their home team. They had been winning the entire game, but I tied in the 8th, and went ahead by one with a solo HR in the 9th.
- One game I faced a cheater. How did s/he cheat? If I got a runner on base, what s/he would do is QUICKLY pitch the ball, thus relinquishing my ability to not only select a pitch, but also steal bases (wouldn't even have time to LEAD, let alone steal a base). S/He would also pause the game for no reason after each time I paused to warm up pitchers, pinch batters, etc. I lost the game 4-3 (I was losing 4-0, but hit a 3 run homer in the 9th after two singles).
- One game, the person constantly paused the game throughout for no reason at all (usually paused if I went on a streak). When the player ran out of pause time in the 6th inning, the player quit.
- Finally, one player decided it would be fun to hit each batter after I got a hit. So, after each hit I got, he would then hit the following batter (or intentionally walk him). He also tended to 'leave' his pitcher alone for minute-long periods here and there, at least 3 times during our game. This led to slow game play and just not a fun experience. I was winning 11 to 3 in the 7th, and the player, of course, quit.

Do others share these experiences? Regardless, I don't think I'll be playing online anytime again soon!

the online play is terrible.....theres just way too much skipping for me to enjoy

Welcome to the world of online play for sports games. I have played a total of 2 online games in MLB 08 The Show and that's about 2 too many. The large majority of people are jerks.

MLB the show needs to contact Activision and infinity ward for online game play.

I don't know why you specified sports games. This sounds like typical online play for *any* game.

People hiding behind the internet are jerks.

Sports game is where I find the majority of this problem to be. At least out of the online games I own. I don't run into jerks on MGO, Warhawk, or Rock Band. But if I pop in Madden, NCAA, NHL, MLB, it's just a game of who can take advantage of the most glitches.

Maybe if every game, and every owner had headset support like the 360, I would then include every online game.

I agree 100%, sports game usually have awful online gameplay. I stopped playing MLB the show 08 online, it was terrible. I remember madden 07 online.. I wish I could forget.. awful.

Warhawk - smooooth online play
COD4 - super smooth online play!

Every sports game should be a minimum 60fps as well..
