Default Product Placement in Movies

On the back of Morgan Spurlock's documentary,
The Greatest Movie Ever Sold(2011) was wondering if anyone is influenced by product placements in movies. The only thing I can remember coverting was the Omega Seamaster watch as worn by James Bond(limited edition of course)
If actor X drinks a different Cola to the one I like,I ain't switching no matter how much I like actor X or the movie.

It actually takes me out of the movie for a brief moment if a character is drinking Space Cadet Cola instead of Coca-Cola. But when the camera lingers on a real product, that also takes me out of the moment.

Like in Frequency, when there's actually a shot on the stick of gum being unwrapped. Or Casino Royale, where Bond takes an extended look at his GPS even though the GPS shows the destination is straight ahead and right in front of him.

Sony is the worst I think, they have their products littered all over their films. But it doesn't affect my purchases.

Apparently product placement was born in 1981-2 when Mars Candy Company refused to allow Spielberg to feature their M&Ms in a little movie called E.T., allowing the nascent Reese's Pieces candy to capitalize and gain huge popularity.

Southland Tales a.k.a Budweiser: The Movie

Aside from the annoyingly obvious product placement I thought it was an alright film.

really not an issue unless it has too much of a screen presence

you can be biased against product placement and argue against everything in a film

Yeah, but at least they don't put them in the trailers, like the Adam Sandler comedies do:
"'Click', sponsored by Bed Bath & Beyond!...And look for "Hawaiian Punch and Wendy's presents 'Mr. Deeds', now on video!"

I wonder if Ikea paid a lot for placement in Fight Club.

I'm guessing not that much.

I'm reminded of what Bob Gale once stated, with regard to Robert Zemeckis' view on this subject. Gale said (paraphrasing), "Bob quit taking money from companies, in exchange for placement, because it carried the potential occurence of a lawsuit." He also said, "Bob and I didn't mind using various products in the [Back to the Future] films, if they were donated to us. But we didn't want to deal with money."

I don't mind product placement for movies that are set in our world. I much prefer it to weird made up or generic stuff. I don't like it when it is blatant, and I don't know that I change any of my habits when it's subtle.

(Probably because Zemeckis nearly DID get a lawsuit, after California Raisins objected to paying for a placement in BTTF1 and getting theirs via a bum on a park bench.)

There was an incident with Jerry Maguire where the "F*** Reebok" line was originally "F*** Nike," but Reebok paid for product placement because at the end Rod Tidwell got a Reebok commercial, which was cut from the movie so Reebok sued.

The next James Bond movie will reportedly receive the most product placement money in history. It will reportedly receive $45 million for product placement. The highest amount ever received prior to this was $20 million for Minority Report.

http://screenrant.com/james-bond-pro...t-robf-113418/

Side note, but I find the most annoying product placement is done by Microsoft. Usually this is in TV, but I hate when I hear the line "Lets Bing it" when the characters need to search for something. I rarely see anyone use Bing, much less use that line. The other annoyance I have is when people are using laptops with the Microsoft logo on them. Microsoft doesn't make computers, so why do they pretend to on TV?
