Default New Rival ???

Shanghai United Optical Disc has completed the initial production run of a disc that the company hopes can compete against the now-entrenched Blu-ray technology. The so-called China Blue High-definition Disc is based on Toshiba's HD-DVD format and is expected to be cheaper to manufacture than Blu-ray discs. As Reported by The Hollywood Reporter

Another competitor? Just another blu-ray wannabe. Plus, I'm not interested in imported electronics.

Then again China is such a huge developing market that it is possible that such big country could accomodate several formats. But I certainly don't see those Chinese formats outside China

and the PROC has a very very very very very ummmmmm. . . captive audience(?).

Edit: I say this because they prefer to develop their own tech "standards" that they can control. Mobile phones, encryption "standards", office document suites, restrictions on OS manufacturers come to mind.

Interesting. By your profile I would have thought you lived in San Antonio.
So what sort of electronic gadgetry do they manufacture in Cuba these days?

China is always interested in open formats...If they can't easily pirate Blu Ray...they'll ditch it. Keep in mind that VCD is still popular in Asia. HD DVD has been cracked so I don't know that there's a need for a new format...I would imagine it uses the same stamping equipment...but then again, they won't bother to pay authoring fees either...so it's easier for them to have their own format at the end of the day.

but VCDs and VCD players are cheap, it also helps that they are extremely low quality (so studios like it better then selling a higher quality DVD for 1$).

The problem with this is who would want it and who will buy it. Think about it, will a studio be happier still selling the VCD for 1$ or bring them to HD. The issue is the person in China with the $ to spend and that wants high quality (HD) movies, won't buy a home grown product, it will limit him to much (plus it is not as "exotic"). The person that is poor can't afford it. It is the exact same issue HD DVD had. You need a lot of really dumb people who care enough to want HD but at the same time don't care enough to spend the money on a better more popular more universal format. The only way this has a chance is if China decides to outlaw BD (i.e. only allow CH-DVD).

That's "China White..." and often its really Fentanyl... which requires a FAR lower dose and often kills people attempting to use it recreationally. Then again, given the inevitable lead paint issues, etc, China Blue may prove just as deadly.

Actually, I think its a pirate going, "Today R5 DVD. Tomorrow, China Blue."

Nice of Toshiba to help them out, though.
